He was a leader during the revolution that overthrew the Shah and there is photographic evidence that he was involved in the hostage crisis at the US embassy. The mullahs are now rewarding his committment by allowing him to appear to be in charge.

Usually there is some feature of personality that makes an individual stand out from most others. It could be a driving ambition, a sense of ruthlessness, a great speaking ability, a love of politics. It seems to me that it is a purpose-driven, ambitious, power-loving, egotistical personality that seems to be willing to climb over others, often by any means necessary, to reach the top.
