I have Amblyopia, more comonly known as "lazy eye". I was found to have it at a young age, but wearing the patch didnt fix it. And now I find my vision gets worse every year. Its not real bad, but I am considered legally blind in one eye.

I went to specialists about this years ago. Where they told me there was nothing to be done. My husband dosent accepept that. He thinks there has to be something.

Does any one else have this? Was there anything done for you? Is your vision getting worse?

It is my right eye that is lazy. And mine does not wonder or move about. You cant tell it by looking at me. I am shocked to hear so many of you wear glasses. I was told I could not have glasses because one would be sooo thick, It just wouldnt work. I had contacts for a few months, but when I called the specialist, they told me I was scammed, that contacts cant help me. The last time my vision was check it was 40/400 It used to only be 20/300 like 3 years ago, so mine is getting worse.

And I have always had the "head tilt" thing going on. I never noticed it. I went to the doctor and he told me to go look at all my pics, my head would be tilted in most of them. It was! LOL He also aksed if I cried alot as a baby. My Mom said DAILEY! LOL He said it was cause I was having severe heachaches cause my eyes were "fighting" eachother. Who knows if he knew what he was talking about. LOL

I've had a lazy eye (my right eye) since the age of six and have also done the patch and worn glasses almost all of my life. It's just something that I have accepted. I am 31 now.

I just had an eye exam on Saturday and found out that my lazy eye is getting stronger and that my left eye's peripheral vision is going so I need stronger prescription. Weird...since lately my lazy eye wanders all the time; however, I have been an insomniac.

As far as correcting it...I asked my optometrist this question. He doesn't feel that surgery would be beneficial (who's to say that it won't be for you though?) and that amblyopia is a birth defect. Who knew??

I have Amblyopia. They caught mine when I was 7. I am not legally blind (as far as I know), but my vision is poor in my right eye. I wear glasses (although I might be able to wear SOFT contacts). I currently have hard contacts b/c of all of my astigmatism, but I don't wear them.

There really isn't much that can be done. I don't really know all of the details. My eyes have not really changed at all since I was 14 and I'm 21 now. Its been a blessing.

My mom has Kertaconis (spelling?), and she is legally blind. She wears hard contacts, and it helps her vision, although she still does not see very well, but it could be a lot worse.

*edit*

I didn't know that it was a birth defect. My lazy eye is not noticable at all. You can barely tell that it is more closed than the other eye. It is by millimeters. I also do not have the wandering eye problem. When I put on my glasses for the first time one of my eyes went in, and I think that I had some minor problems with it while wearing the patch.

I would mainly just look at things out of my left eye. Like if I was watching television, I would turn my head slightly so that I was looking more out of my left eye. I didn't even know that I was doing it.

The main problem that I had was blurry vision.

I would find someone who is willing to try patching again with you. It has been found that it can be beneficial at any age, although better results are usually found at younger ages. Now it has been studied that patching for only two hours a day is as good as patching 24hours. There are also a few other techniques that can be used for amblyopia treatment but none are guaranteed. These are mainly techniques used to stimulate that eye - ask your doctor if they do vision therapy or can refer you to someone who does.
FYI - you cannot be legally blind in one eye - legally blind means that your best eye has poor vision.
I have a feeling that the prescriptions between your two eyes is very different, this is probably why glasses are not recomended. But glasses can now be made with what is called high index lenses, these are more expensive but will make higher prescriptions not as thick. Ask about that option. But, amblyopia is a problem that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses - but they can still be used to help that eye see its best.

Wow. I'm seventeen and i never heard about that before and i have it. I never really looked into it though because i never gave it much thought. I was about 3-4 years old and i had to do the patch thing also. I found that strange that i was the only student in preschool who had to do that even though others wore glasses. I stopped wearing glasses but occasionally I wear it. I know its bad but i havent really realized it till your bulletin. I remember going to the eye doctor for a yearly checkup and she said i shouldnt wear contacts since its only one eye. So i dont kno. But im glad u post this question up also because i was an aware about my eyesight till now! yay thanks

You could try going to a specialist again, it's impossible to tell what your options are with out actually examening you. There have been many innovations since you've been checked. You should be getting your vision checked every year, ask your doctor what you can do. It's possible that there is nothing that can fix your vision.
