I am very sorry to hear of your loss. To be honest, I researched death by carbon monoxide poisoning when I was in a very deep depression and I was desperate. Thankfully, I was able (with help) to get over this.
Your husband had a very peaceful death. Cars used to be different (something to do with the catalytic converter) and there used to be many accidental deaths dues to carbon monoxide poisoning. The reason the people died was because is is a very peaceful death; the people just go to sleep. A few winters ago, where I live, an entire family died in their sleep because of a carbon monoxide leak in their house. They just continued sleeping.
This probably took a while and your husband may have had some emotional difficulty but he was not in any physical pain from the carbon monoxide.
When a person commits suicide (or desires to) it is not because he or she does not love their family. It is because he or she cannot go on any longer.
I am sorry for your pain.

I am sorry for you loss. what happens physiologically is simple. carbon monoxide will cling to your hemoglobin so tightly that it won't let go... normally oxygen will cling to it and then be released in the body and exchanged for carbon dioxide. The hemoglobin will carry oxygen from the lungs, and it will exhale carbon dioxide. but if carbon monoxide attaches to the hemoglobin.. then it will not let go. and you body can't take and use oxygen.. I hope that makes sense... I have heard from many that you get sleepy and it's not painful. you simply go to sleep. I have heard this from people that have been rescued from such suicide attempts...I trust he did not suffer... Now you are suffering... please read all you can and learn all you can about suicide. you may want to be mad, this is normal.. but you must understand depression... I tried to commit suicide once... I honestly believed that everyone would be better off without me..I was sick....and don't feel guilty, there is absolutely nothing on earth that you could have done to change or prevent this. It is not about you at all. Depression is so very insidious. God be with you.... trust me I know depression. if you want to chat or send me an email to discuss that would be fine... Good luck to you.

I'm so sorry to hear what has happened.
To my knowledge, carbon monoxide is completely odorless. This is what makes it so dangerous. You can die from carbon monoxide poisoning without you even knowing it. According to accounts I've read, most people just pass out unknowingly. I don't think it is anything like suffocation, because this is asphyxiation and its a completely different thing.
I believe it is true that he died peacefully.

Well dear lady, may your husband rest in peace
Probably he is the only one who can answer this question, moreover if there was a witness to the suffering of your husband, he can answer your question. If you have seen your dear husband in his last days or hours, maybe you can answer.
I know death is terrible, I read in a book, it is like taking out CACTUS plant from every muscle of your body. This is the experience people say when our soul leaves the body.
GOD KNOWS BEST

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Is your 'best' friend some kind of medical expert on this matter? I think your friend is wrong, and even if she was right, which she isn't, its a pointless and mean-spirited thing to tell a grieving friend, (in my opinion)...my understanding is that it is like feeling drowsy then falling asleep/losing consciousness, and not waking up, peaceful, painless

after you breathe it in corbon monozide gts absorbed into ur blood and it takes the place of oxygen in ur red blood cells making carboxyhemoglobin.
because of this, the tissues tha need the most oxygen is affted, like the heard and brain. so breathing this gas could get you headaches and stuff to healthy ppl.
im sorry about your loss. i hope you get better.
