It proves that there is a lack of respect for history; every power that has fought in Afghanistan never did so in full force, making it a long, protracted, bloody conflict that they eventually tire of.

However the UN is slowly taking over the mission there, and for whatever percived softness there is, the folks in the Blue Hats are stubborn. A list of ongoing UN missions and start year:
Cyprus (1964)
Golan heights (1974)
Jammu and Kashmir (1949)
Western Sahara (1991)

It's not Afghanistan, and it's not the Taliban. Neither of those have some magical invincibility. It goes deeper than that. Have you ever studied the Vietnam conflict, or the American Revolution?

When established powers go to war, they expect to plow through enemies who were uniforms and march in a straight line. They deal with guerrila tactics, but their goal is always to capture some flag, some capital, some symbol of the place where they're fighting.

To conquer France, you take Paris.
To conquer Britain, you take London.
To conquer the USA, you take Washington, DC

Where is the symbol of Afghanistan?
Where is the symbol of the Taliban?

The world hates practitioners of ethnic cleansing, but it would seem that to destroy a symbol that is only found in the hearts of men can be done only by destroying men, destroying their women and children.

In the end, established powers always run into their own consciences. And one day, we in the United States will run into ours. But the trail of wasted lives and wasted dollars may stretch far beyond today's horizon.

Personally, if I lived in Afghanistan, I'd just move.

The Russians were here years. They suffered 12 times the casualties of the ISAF forces. It shows that Afghanistan is one of the harshest terrains on the planet? Afghanistan is under control as compared to many places in the world today. The Afghanistan people hate the Taliban worse than they hate us. That is a huge improvement over when the Russians were here. They like the fact that we build roads, dig wells, built schools, treat their sick and injuried. Afghanistan is a work in progress. Does your country have crime?? WHY AFTER 1000s OF YEARS YOU CAN'T GET RID OF IT??? Wow!

if we had a leader such as Ronald Reagan this would have been a cake walk , he would have called his generals and said get the job done and when you are finished call me.he knew the generals knew more about running a war machine than he did and he had enough sense to leave the job to the professionals, but, no we have a dumb *** who thinks him and his stupid friend can run this war better than the generals can, when neither has even gone thru boot camp, we will not and can not win this or any other war unless we let the pros handle it, I will guarantee if they let the generals go and do their job our men will kick the butts of the Taliban and insurgency in Iraq, and be out of there in 6 months

It shows that the taliban wasn't a bloodthirsty 12th century government who simply forbade the teaching of females to read and chopping the heads off people for adultry, but a reflection of a WHOLE SOCIETY is still living in the stone age.

One of the more amusing sharia laws is that a woman risks being excecuted for "adultry" if she comes froward after being RAPED, unless she has FOUR "good muslim men" who were witness to the crime. Of course, if there were four "good men" were standing by, a rape would not have happened, right? Failing that, she may be procecuted and excecuted for adultery!

Why we are wasting our time on these undeserving medevil morons. I will never know.

Yes, we could "defeat" the Taliban if we wanted to, but that would mean killing every man, woman, and child in that backward nation.

(Well, maybe not the females. They aren't even allowed to go to school.)

There are many things you left out about that theatre of combat, for one, the lands and territory are extremely difficult to patrol..., also, we cant just throw bombs wherever we want, we've proven that will not work. Its up to the forces on the ground...have faith in those fighting, they will not pass up the chance to shoot ANY bad guys.
We may be there for a while yet.

Salute to Allied troops wherever you are fighting the bad guys....stay safe, and thank you. USA, Canada, Britian, Germany, and whoever else I can't remember. Our hearts are with you!!!

it shows that the taliban aren't in Afghanistan - they're hiding in Pakistan under the protection of a population not governed by their own country's laws.

shows that the unwillingness or political inablility to commit massive forces to a conflict may doom it to defeat, or at least lack of a final success.
