So jewishgirl-when you've done your conversion through the orthodox temple, can you choose other sects you want to go to or do you have to stay with the orthodox church? thanks

sects in Judaism dont work the same way as they do in Christianity.

they go by levels of observance of Jewish law. As such a more "orthodox" group will not recognize the legitimate of a much more lax group.

The reasons for this are long and complicated and can take almost a book to explain.

suffice it to say Orthodox Judaism is the group that is the most observant. So a conversion though Orthodoxy is much harder it is recognized universally by all Jews and the State of Israel.

The same is not true for groups such as Reform and Conservative. Conservative dose not recognize Reform convert ions while Reform conversions are only recognized by themselves.

Once you have your Orthodox conversion, you can go to any synagogue you wish to (Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox). I should also add, it will take you several years of study, and living a strict Kosher and observant life to get this Orthodox conversion.

Remember, the Orthodox do not call their place of worship and study a temple--only the Reform do. Orthodox and Conservatives always say synagogue. These last two feel it is very wrong, as the only Temple was in Jerusalem.

well, the rabbi would be your best bet. you CAN convert through the other branches but some jews would not consider you jewish if you did since the conversion is not done according to halacha. but its really your own personal choice. if you like reform judaism best then convert to reform judaism. the drawback is that conservative and orthodox jews would not consider you jewish.
