Take the 3rd person pretirite, knock off the final letter and add the endings.
1st conjugation:
-ara, aras, ara, -áramos, -arais, -aran.
2nd & 3rd conjugation:
-iera, ieras, etc.

Good for all verbs, even irregulars, e.g. ser > fue > fuera; tener > tuvo > tuviera.

You can use the ending '-ra' or '-se' which is grammatically equivalent and also often used.

Examples:
Amar >> Amara, amase
Tener >> Tuviera, tuviese
Pedir >> Pidiera, pidiese
