I went through this with my son at 2 1/2 years. Talk with your pediatrician. My ped suggested I have him tested with the school system. It is free but I also had him tested (as a second opinion) with the Early Intervention program through my county. (which was also free). Your ped should also have info on that. He was deemed 25% delayed with speech and took speech therapy for 5 months. Now we can't shut him up! ha! Go with your gut though. People may tell you "she'll talk when she's ready". But if you don't feel something is right stay with it. You will be the only advocate your child will have. People told me the same with my son and I had to fight the county to get him services and in the end he was diagnosed PDD NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified) which is in the Autism spectrum. He is mild so not as bad as other children but now that he has had the help he needs he is popular, social, talkative and A and B in school. Good luck!

She needs to be evaluated by a speech theropist, if you live in the US she can get free evaluation & treatment. Call your local intermidate or "special needs" public schools system and ask for the early intervention program it maybe a diffrent name depending on state. A 2 year old needs to be evaluated if NOT speaking at least 150 words with 3 word strings, a normal 2 year old speaks 200 to 400 words. Good Luck . My son too is in this program... I can not say enough for it!

find a child psychologist who has experience conducting neurodevelopmental assessments on young children...a full assessment will provide you with lots of information regarding your baby (strengths and potential weaknesses) and a good child psychologist will be able to point you in the right direction for any services that might be of benefit. Usually insurance covers at least part of the cost for a developmental assessment. Clinics through teaching hospitals are usually a good bet. Good luck! Don't ignore this- if something is wrong, early intervention will lead to a much better prognosis than later intervention...Also, has your child had his/her hearing checked? A hearing problem could explain this...

I suggest you call your local school district (if you live in the U.S not sure about elsewhere). Tell them your concern and that your child is 3 years old and when she becomes of age she will be attending their school. Once you notify them they have to test her speech and all sorts of things so they can see what kinda of help they can provide. Yes by law they have to do it for free. If they tell you to send her somewhere make sure you tell them you know the law. The law was put in to place to help detect and fix problems in children BEFORE it is too late. Sometimes once they get into school they are set in their ways and it is so difficult to change.

If you live outside of the U.S. still check with your school district. They should be able to direct you to somewhere your daughter can be tested to see if anything is wrong.

All kids are different so don't worry too much. If you are worried get her checked out at the doctors. Some things you can do yourself to encourage her talking is talk to her. Not in baby talk but like you are talking to another person. Read books to her. Ask her questions about what she thinks or what she is doing. I am sure you are doing many of these but it might be good to concerntrate on them for a while.

don't upset yourself over the pronunciation of words! That time will come, you have to understand you daughter is only two, and it may have come from you mispronouncing the words, an easy slip into baby talk in other words, when you are around her.

My suggestion, talk to your peditrician about her talking. Start finding books that help her with words. Teaching her words like cat dog something among her age group.

Don't beat yourself up over it though! Like I said she's only two, some children don't become "obsessive" talkers until they are four or around their own age group all the time!

I would get in touch with a speech theripst and see what she has to say. I had one child in my daycare who was struggling in speech and his mother got him a theripsit and it helped alot. I think you can get free aid from the state

I took my daughter to toddler school. Since she was my only child at that time, we felt she can't relate with us grown ups. It helped that she was among children of her age, plus the guidance of preschool teachers. My daughter is now 7 years old and is doing well.
