In Australia your GP can organise an ultrasound and it is usually done at 3 months gestation. It is at 3 months that the most useful info can be gained from an ultrasound.

Ultrasounds can be done at hospitals, x-ray centres or wherever there is an ultrasound machine.

It depends on whether you are seeing a midwife (through a hospital clinic) or an obstetrician. The first scheduled ultrasound is usually between 12 and 13 weeks. It is great to see the baby at this stage, but it is actually a screening test for downs syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. In two of my three scans, the babies were sucking their thumbs!
The next scan is at 18 weeks and that is also a screening one, to make sure all the baby's organs etc. are developing properly. It is really amazing, because the baby looks just like a tiny little person! All the best with your pregnancy.

Are you going private or public? If you are going public you can have all of your pre natal care looked after by your GP. Your GP will then book you in for your ultrasound at around 20 weeks. In the public system this is the only ultrasound you will have. You may have others if you experience any problems during your pregnancy, but that will be up to the doctor. If going public you can also choose to have your prenatal care through the hospital where you plan on giving birth. Good luck, I hope all goes well.
