I never heard of any such news. Anyway Indians would not require foreign military for any reason. China did enter in 1961, during the time when Indians never thought that anybody was enemy so never bothered for better defense. Things have changed ever since and Indians boast of not only 3rd largest army but also better AF & Navy technologically (leave aside Nukes as Indians are strong supporter of No-first-use).

The only thing Indians ask help from other nations is for curbing state sponsored terrorism. Any help honestly?

Size is not what determines an armed forces strength. It is intelligence, training, equipment, strategy, and how well your command and control is.

In 1991Iraq, which had the forth largest army in the world, one million people, was destroyed in less than one month by an army not as large for all the various reasons I mentioned.

To answer your question; it is because of China. The Pentagon has been planning since the end of the Cold War to win a war with what they believe to be a coming Chinese superpower. India will be the other superpower, and because China's economy will be about ten trillion dollars more than the U.S. economy by about the year 2030, America will look for help in India.

India being a Democracy has every interest in America's military having a place to stay in their country.

It is purely up to the Indian Government if having a US Military base on their territory is in their country's best interest. Monitarially their are many reasons to having a US Military base in any country. Politically, their are many reasons both for and against having a US Military base in your country. If India wants to ally itself Militarially with the USA against the growing Chinese Military Power developing on its boarder, then that would be a powerful deterent to Chinese agression. Let's face it, China has undertaken Military action on India's neighbor, Tibet and is hostial towards Tiawan. The growing concern which the Chinese pose is a strong reason to find strong military alliances. If the Indian Government believes it is in its best interest, then why not?

Even though I am American, I will say that only let America have a base there if it suits your government and your people. When the Americans left the Philippines however, they also left a lot of Filipinos unemployed as well. American bases would be good for the economy, but there also might be an increase in crime as well.

I think it should be up to the Indian people. The benefit would be our weapons technology. Nobody is going to march on India. India has nuclear weapon and missles. The USA has latest attack technologies. As an American I am not looking for another place to go. Maybe it is time to stay home.

as I recall I think we already have an airbase there on an island for B-52's. I don't think theres any good reason to have ground forces stationed there except maybe a rapid deployment force for the persian gulf.

I guess it all boils down to if India is America's fried or foe. I don't think India can afford to say no.

India is neutral?? Wow, news to me.

Only if they want all the money that is tied to having an American base there, including housing rentals, local shop purchases, employment for local nationals, strip bars, hookers, used car lots, etc.

Hey, if they WILLINGLY invite another country (any country) to have a base on their soil, then that is their choice.
