That would depend on how much you want to spend. For instance, if this is a person who is temporarily under a lot of stress, maybe some relaxation tapes or a gift certificate for a massage would be nice. For a mom that never gets a break, an offer to babysit for the day could lower the pressure. Maybe this is a person who doesn't need "things" but could just use a friend to talk to.

Most people who are truly on the verge of a nervous breakdown need to take a few steps back from the day to day stresses of life, see a doctor to see if there is a temporary medication they could take to help them cope (although I'm not a big supporter of taking drugs - prescribed or recreational - to solve your problems). Some people need more help than that. They need a complete removal of the stresses in their life and counselling to help them get through the rough spots.

Since I'm not privy to information on why this person is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, it's hard to say what is needed here. The holidays add more stress so this could be a delicate time. I doubt the person needs material things as much as some real help. Just remember, the best help a person can get is to learn how to help one's self.

Good luck.

Something mainly from the heart, a nervous breakdown is too general, perhaps you could specify what has happened in this person's life to be at this stage. But generally speaking a nervous breakdown could have depression involved, so something meaningful that shows them you care and share a strong bond. Such as if you in the past did something (that the 2 of you shared closley) a gift as a reminder of that could help.

Well
Yoga can be a great friend in every diet. It's all about hormones balance. There are no "bad" hormones. But when hormones get unbalanced, bad things happen in your body. Your body releases cortisol when you're under stress. It's part of the whole “fight or flight” response. Increased cortisol levels could be making you fat. The kind of fat you are most likely to store from elevated cortisol is called visceral fat — the dangerous belly fat that’s linked to diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

I'm following this great online program that teaches how to use YOGA to lose weight. You should check it out as well. This is the link of the site: http://yogafitness.toptips.org
Cheers ;)

Something simple and comforting to help them relax. An oil diffuser, a spa gift card, bath products, a pedicure certificate, a nice spa pillow at walmart is only $10. She could enjoy it in bed every night. How about you offer to take the person to lunch or a movie? These are some de-stressors I have used. Hope it helps you two! Merry Christmas!!

Reduce your current stress. Your stress hormone cortisol is usually activated by extremely low-calorie weight loss plans, intense training, lack of rest and day-to-day worries, which brings about a spike in glucose levels inside your blood. More worryingly, it can help with blocked arteries and fat build up around your internal organs, putting you at risk of diabetes and heart disease. The sole prescription for this is to… pass the time.

Something that would help them relax for a bit, such as a gift certificate to a spa or massage or a CD with relaxing music.
