Wow, anyone else notice how on practically any firearm or hunting forum there are people who throw as much terrible wrong information out there as possible? I also find that a lot of the time within a question there are debates about factual information, these debates are actually presented as if they were nothing but opinions, as if both individuals can be right. I'm not bashing the Yahoo "ask." anymore than any other forum, so please don't take offence, this is just a rant that you unfortunates had to be a part of.

I agree with you on your opinion about the differing of opinions and all the propaganda that gets thrown into every issue that comes up.
The best thing I have found to do in this situation is do my own research on the facts and only the facts.
Experience is good but is and always will be presented as someone wants to remember it whether it be good or bad.
I think most of the people on this site only answer questions to gain points not because they really know anything about the question being posed.

There's no one right answer for many things, people can argue about 7x57, 303, 30-06, 308 and so on and so on all day. The truth is that they will all do about the same job at the ranges that people typically use them. For heavy game I could use a 375 H&H, 416 Rigby or a hot 338 and they'd all do about the same job too. 7 hundredths of an inch doesn't make that much difference. 100 ft.lbs or 100fps here and there doesn't either.
For the hand gun stuff there's a lot of misinformation and misconception and people tend to believe what they read. The one-shot incapacitation statistics discounted any statistics for people hit by more rounds, so they favor revolvers which have less shots and encourage users to fire less rounds. But then there was a series of terminal ballistics studies that confirmed some of the findings.
Then there's the influence of films and tv which are not a good source of fact.
If you'll pardon the cliche, there's more than one way to skin a cat, and the discussion reflects this. I can't argue that a 1911 isn't an effective stopper, but the Glock 20 will also do the job, some can't stand the Glock trigger, some prefer the 1911. Some like other things, some prefer revolvers. At the end of the day the person who keeps his head and shoots straight, regardless of what he's using, will usually win.

I have noticed this as well. Here are some sources of confusion
State laws differ. Thus different answers for different states
what is legal? If I have to fill out special paperwork, pay a transfer fee and go to special shops to buy a silencer is a silencer legal?
myths perpetrated by the media. teflon coated bullets are not "cop killers" but if you watched movies in the late eighties or t.v. you would think they can penetrate armor. that there are plastic guns. AWB expiring means people are going to buy more full autos. Glocks explode (o.k. in certain circumstances that might be true)
What is effective? a .223 with a 70+ grain bullet that you have to hand feed because it won't fit the magazine is probably effective on deer. but then a .50 bmg is more effective.
Then there are answers that someone knows to work, good answers, and the best answers.
alot of wisdom is dated. Take the 9mm vs .45 debate. If you look at the effectiveness of the newest rounds (in gelatin) it seems to me you would decide the 9 is close or as effective as a .45
people are dogmatic. Glock vs 1911 vs cz debate. If you ask some people which is better for situation x they will always answer the same thing.
I think that most of the people on this site are under the age of eighteen.
As a piece of advice If Boker or Bound say it it is at least a better answer if not the best. Though I do no always agree with them but that is judgement and probably different experiences

The worst is the people that just repeat whatever they heard at the gunstore. I've heard more bs from the "gun store comandoes" than any other group. They will tell you that you need a .45 , and that 9mm isnt powerfull enough for personal defense , and all berettas blow up. Unfortunatally alot of people take their word for it and post it in here as fact, and then the asker gets bad info.

Opinions are like ***holes. Everyone has one, and they all stink.
Facts can be/are skewed to make the company/individual look better.
Best is: take the opinion with a grain of salt, read the facts, do your comparison, and formulate your own opinion so that you can make the most informed decision.

of course it is noticed.
sadly there are people answering questions on safety issues that are so far from being safe that it scares me. i only hope that people are here for fun and when it comes down to actual use of information they are smart enough to go to the proper sources for information.
where do you go for information on your car ? to a mechanic or to the kid downthe street because he has owned one. Same goes for firearms and hunting. Many of the answers are from people who fired their Dad's 22 rifle once or walked into the woods one day.
Thank goodness we can sort out all the "point gatherers" from the ones of actual knowlege.
