This person is a disabilities manager who has encouraged me and helped me quite a bit, but I don't wnat her to feel pressured to respond, by giving it to her in person. But would it be more personable to give it to her in person?

To give it in person is more sincere.

Giving the gift personally will provide you the chance to express your feelings with emotions. Also this will show to her that you are responsible enough to face your actions.
Nice thought after all in the end your feelings behind the gift matter the most.
Good Luck

I know how you feel. I often like to leave gifts so I won't be around when the person opens it. I think either way is just fine.

She would appreciate it either way. But if you give it to her in person, it gives you an opportunity to express a verbal appreciation also.
I usually start with "This is really nothing - but I just wanted to blah blah blah.

Very thoughtful of you to express your thanks.
Good luck
