Not outside the country. In the country. Air Force, Army, EVERYTHING. One number. That's all I need.

This is actually a very complicated question, mainly because the Department of Defense uses multiple classifications for its properties. The best answer that I can find to your question is that there are 969 U.S. military bases in the 50 states -- presumably labeled as such because they have permanent barracks. The number increases to about three times that if you include all military sites (even those without personnel). There is a lot of information about this question from the recent base reallignment and closure (BRAC) process.

The total number of military bases in the US is 456.

The number of bases in CONUS is 440
- http://militarycomms.tripod.com/military-bases/
- this site lists the names and locations of all 440 bases

The total number of bases in Alaska & Hawaii is 16
- http://globemaster.de
- this site lists the name, location and service branch of all 16 bases.

The answers that the total number of bases in the US as being 969 is not supported by the sources cited in the 2 Answers indicting that number.

Reviewing the www.Amazon.com source it is a paragraph long review of a book written by Chalmera Johnson. In one sentence is says the the DOD list 969 bases in the US but does not reference any soucre to support that figure. The souce www.rense.com also refers to the same book and the same sentence about the 969 number and has no supporting DOD source.

The www.globalsecurity.org site provides a military document describing and listing the number of base closings and some that will not close. The 969 number is not found in that document.

What's all that money buying, aside from endless overkill through the defense contractors' cornucopia of hi-tech weaponry? It's buying a far-flung empire of 1,700 bases upon which the sun never sets! Unbeknownst to most Americans, the Department of Defense ("DOD") currently lists 725 official US military bases outside of the country, and another 969 inside the 50 states (not to mention numerous secret bases).

Do you mean these kinds of bases--the underground kind?!--the kind that are meant for ordinary U.S. citizens?...
