This is a 89 Nissan Sentra.
The car DEQ's fine. But am furious that after a supposed $85. diagnostic price to fix an engine light that stays on. The end price was $ 200. - the light still on, and the advice was put a sticker over it. !! It goes off sometimes , just enough to make you batty.
I don't think the 89's have the computer, and require manual testing. Any help will be appreciated.

Wow I am sorry you got to the wrong dealer. But here I go most mechanics work on 0 to 4 year old Nissan's every day and were not around 18 years ago when your car was made. The computer in your car has 12 diagnostic codes and can only be accessed by checker box or turning a screw on the computer and watching two leds flash. Most often there is a loose corroded wire just to the passenger side of the intake manifold gray plastic plug with 8 wires in it. or ground wires on back of the intake. How many miles? Your options are limited did you think about a new sentra?

A diagnostic was a good idea. It let you know if anything was wrong. Now that you know there was nothing wrong I have a suggestion. Disconnect the battery then reconnect it. That should do it. I had a car with the same problem and disconnecting the battery did the trick. Then get a sticker for your mechanic's mouth because he is an idiot and should not be allowed anywhere near a car ever agian.

if you are in california you are protected by the bureau of automotive repair, the number to which is by law posted in the repair shop. if you cannot find that number, call info--they will give it to you. any other state, i am not certain if you are protected from bad auto repair folks. your problem is in the ecu--it needs to be reset--if the stealership could ot figger thast out, then perhaps you shoul go to an independent garage or a specialty shop. get a haynes manual and you can find out how to do it yourself.
and, gawd, your diagnostic is more spensive than mine--i have 300zx--turbo and non. my diagnostics are only 60-70$ at a specialty shop.
shop around--there are so many other ways to get ripped off than going to the stealership--especially since they have proven themselves to be somewhat irresponsible.

call the service manager of the stealership you went to--tell him your story--tell him you are not happy with the service provided and that you want them to fix the problem you went in there for in the first place. if he says they cannot manage to do tyhis--report them to better business bureau, nissan corporation, your states consumer affairs division, and wherever else you can find to report them because you do not wannt anyone else to be so ripped off by shoddy workmanship.

good luck. i used to have an 89 sentra sports coupe---another life ago.

Take it to a nissan garage and if they are the ones to tell you to put a sticker over it then I would call Nissan North America.

if the sticker is to low-tech for you simply remove the Gage cluster and remove errant check engine light lamp therefore eliminating the problem of the constantly illuminated check engine light. if that is too time consuming obtain small drill bit and drill motor. drill through gage cluster into check engine light. this will also eliminate the problem.

You should get your money back and find a real mechanic.
