well,,I am mechanical engineer and 29 years old...
I work in industrial area for 7 years...
When I was in High School, There were many comments for me to choose a department in University...Mostly engineering,,,cos my scientific lessons were good,,,Specially math....
Also my cousin is mech engineer and I think I was inspired of him.....He was working in a factory which manufacturing Jet plane spare parts....I was looking at his projects,,drawings, calculations etc....I was really liked these kind of things....And I decided to choosing mech. engineering department....
İn University lessons were really hard for me/ for us.....it was really ineteresting and different from high school...
Anyhow,,,I finished my university with great effort...)))))
And then I found job easily...Very easy....
My first job was in a company which manufacture trailer,,and truck spare parts..I was working there as Designer,,,I was drawing parts of trailer on Autocad....Also some scientific calculations.....I worked there 2 years....And left there cos of some disagreement for boss...))
And Only 1 week later I found a job...Here is....That manufacture welding machines and air compressors...At the begining I was working for Quality management,,meaning is preparing some document for ISO 9000 quality system....it went on 2 years....Then My boss talked to me and he changed my position as Technical sales Adviser...Now I am Sales Adviser....
All knowledge I had in University used in real life???
No....Not directly or not completely....Real life need experiment....And time move you to truth....
Here is my life...Regards...And Enjoy your life...
By the way I am from Turkey....

My brother is a mechanical enineer. He went to Cal Poly Pomona for 4 yrs. School wasn't hard for him but getting a job afterward was. He had to work at Mervyn for like 6 months while posting his reume all over the intenet. Then after a year he got offered 2 jobs. One was for a gas control tech working at a power plant and he took it right away. The other one he was offered like a week later to be a salesman of robots. The training or it was a month in France, but he just couldn't stand the thought of being a salesman. So he kept the other job. He started as an auronautical engineer but switched majors thinking it would be easier to get a job... He didn't prepare for it in highschool in anyway, just always kept a decent grade point average.

I got my degree from University of Florida in Mech E. I started in Aerospace but transfered due to the market at that time. I now work in the aerospace industry as a Mech E. but I'm marketable still as a Mechanical if I want to get out of Aerospace.
I figured out which degree to get based on what I liked to do and what I wanted a job doing. I like airplanes and I wanted to design them but I also wanted the security fo knowing I can get a job if the market heads south (which it's prone to do).
In high school I took Physics, Calc I and II, and Chemistry to help prepare for college and engineering. If your high school offers drafting, I would suggest that.

Hey, I'm currently doing my mechanical engineering. well, it all depends on which college you are from, which depends on your aptitude and intelligence. My college is placed 8th in my country and out of 8,600,000 students writing the exam(yeah, 8.6 million, happens only in India),only the top 400 ranks get to join my college, which means that only the best brains get through...The campus placements are amazing and we guys are having no problem at all...
