My daughter is 10, in the last week has developed a large (about 3 inch in diameter and getting bigger) lump in her right breast directly under her areola. She has not begun her menses as of yet and does not exhibit any other common symptoms of beginning puberty (no hair growth that is). I know that possibly it could be a cyst of some kind....the other breast is flat and normal, the affected breast's areola is swollen and tender as well. There is a long history of breast cancer in my family, my mother and my sister, both her maternal grandmother and aunt. I have scheduled a doc appt for tommarrow morning, but am thinking about possibly waiting another week or so to take her to the docs, just in case this goes away as suddenly as it appeared...pretty much I don't think that this is something that needs immediate attention as my daughter says it only really hurts when you poke at it. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It may be ordinary cyst or a cancerous tumor. Nothing can be said now. It has got to be checked up by a Doctor and he has to confirm the outcome. I suggest you not to take any chance and be prepared to face even if it is cancer. There is no restriction of age for getting cancer in breasts and anyone, even males, can get it.

in any case the lump has to be removed and sent for necessary biopsy and evaluation. Please attend immediately. I wish the child all the best and free from the disease. -

Breast cancer does not usually occur in 10 year old girls to the best of my knowledge-although I am not a real doctor, I just think I am. I would think it could be a cyst or something. Usually something that is painful is benign, lumps that aren't painful are ones to worry about. I would still take her in and have it checked out though just to be safe. Good luck!

I have a 10 yr old girl as well. If this were my child, my GYN would be called AT ONCE and she would be seen. With a history of breast cancer in the family this shouldn't wait.

Don't wait. She needs to be seen even if this is a cyst or maybe a boil. See the doc in the morning as planned as it is risky to wait when it is something painful and swollen.

I would see a doc.....breast cancer doesn't care about age. It does sound like a cyst or something along those lines, but I would rather be safe than sorry about something like that.

If it were my daughter, I'd take her right away. It's unlikely to be cancer but may need some treatment. Cancerous lesions of the breast are not painful.

From personal experience it's probably a swollen lymph node, but you need to take her into the doctor to be sure. It's not worth waiting and being wrong.

It could just be a fibroadenoma, or a swollen lymph gland, or any one of many non-life-threatening things.
But the advice to take her to see a doctor is the best answer any of us could give- and really the only answer you should listen to.

almost certainly an abcess or cyst. Local heat might drain it, but wouldnt wait since you have the appt.
