a Single parent may enlist in the National Guard, but they must have in place a family Care that stipulates in writing who will be entirely responsible for the children during all training, Drill weekends and deployments. and those deployments can last a year or more. Are the grandparents fit enough(financially and physically) do be able to handle such a long term tasking?

She can, there is a grandma of 5 or 6 kids join recently. As long she is under 42 and no medical problems.
People are misinformed. She gets to keep custody of the children, but she has to present a plan that works where the children will be with a relative that can take care of them and support them while she is at training, when she is deployed and if anything happens to her. Just for her sake when she appoints legal guardianship to someone make sure that person is physically, mentally, economically able to take care of the kids and it is even better if that person is a direct relative, an aunt/uncle/grandparent of the kids. Because if she doesnt and the ex comes along than it could be a long a hairy legal battle.

Yup, Peggy G is right. You have to give up legal guardianship while you're in. If you have kids while you are already enlisted then you can keep 'em but you have to have a family care plan filled out that says who would take care of you kids if you got deployed like the next day. It's not a good situation at all. I would never want to give up guardianship of my kids for any reason. I was in the Navy and knew alot of women that had to do it!

Yes, she can enlist. I'm not saying it is a good idea, but she can get in. She will have to have a family care plan that gives someone else guardianship of the kids for when she is away for training and to handle them when/if she is called to active service. I hope she fully understands that she could well be called up for active service in a war zone, is prepared to leave those kids for a long period of time, and that her parents are young enough to take care of them should something happen to her.

Hi Emily,
With their goals thay would probably accept you but what about your KIDS?
National Guard is NOT just additional income for a few days a year; you could GET SHIPPED TO IRAQ and who is going to watch your KIDS?
Just think about it before you JUMP

you can but you have to give up legal guardianship to someone else until you are in... at least that is what I was told when I tried to join the airforce about 20 years ago...
