Are you looking for what to do to introduce the animals or are you wondering what to do with the cat your husband brought home?
If you're trying to introduce the one cat to the other three and the pup, then keep in mind it will be a slow process. Introduce one animal at a time. Whichever cat or pup you think would be the more accepting of the bunch. Take them into a room, a bedroom or kitchen, where you can watch them, to break up any fights if there are any. Make sure that the new guy has somewhere to go to take is time getting to know the rest of his new family. Take your time and be patient. One cat at a time and the dog. First encounters should be one on one, it's very important that the new cat doesn't feel like he's being ambushed. When he's used to one or two of the gals, then let him explore the rest of the house. (This will take time. And you may want to expect a hiss/bark or two.)
If you're wondering what to do with a stray your husband has brought home, then talk to the local SPCA or Humane Society. See if there are any lost cats out there. Take him to the vet or the H.S. to see if he's been microchipped. There may be a home out there missing him.
If not and if your husband and you are sure you can handle a fifth animal (it would be tough) then take the male to the vet and get him checked out, check that the new addition doesn't have anything that would harm or make your other pets sick, all the normal stuff you did with your other cats. Then get him fixed and you've got a new cat.
If not, still take him to the vet, same as before. When you're sure that he's healthy, either find a home for him yourself or talk to the Humane society to see if they can house him or find him a new home. You and your husband could think about fostering him even.
Good luck, I hope this helps,

Find a home for this boy. Four cats and a dog are more than the limit. Most communities allow 4 pets total.

The female/male thing doesn't have anything to do with it as far as I know. What you do depends on whether you want to keep the cat or not and whether or not you can afford to have it fixed, licensed, get it's shots and all the rest of that business ..and....as someone already mentioned....if you live in the city, there will be a pet limit....you might want to check that out.

I have a Boy Cat & a Male German Shepherd & my husband brought girl cat home.
They animal rescue said it would be alright as long as you introduced them slowly & let them get used to each other.
Plus it helps that you have all girls & this is the only boy. You just have to get them used to him little by little. It took me over a week, bringing out her stuff & letting them get used to her scent and just carrying her through the house.
It will just take time, try an introduce them and see if it works it may be a lot easier than you think.
