Well, if they would SLOW DOWN!!! It wouldn't be so bad, BUT most of them speak 500 words / minute. especially on the phone, telemarketers..............

Makes me CRAZY!!

I find Janet Street-Porter's accent more irritating and she is English and very well educated. So it is a matter of perception.
Some Indians or Bangladeshi speak better English than many British natives. I absolutely love it when I find out that the broadly Lancashire accented man I am talking to on the phone happens to be a second generation immigrant from Asia.

I don't find my Indian friends accent irritating at all. However, call centres are all together a different matter! If you are trying to get technical information, such as BT broadband they seem not to know the first thing about the subject and are obviously reading from a script and sometimes the English is so poor that they are totally incomprehensible! I have Indian friends who complain bitterly as they too find that they can't understand either so what chance have we got!

I find it charming, actually. The only problem that I have with any accent is trying to understand specific information - especially when you are in a hurry. Unfortunately, due to the growth in Indian based call centres, this has caused some friction.

I would think that the same would be true whatever country the calls centres were based in.

If you listen to it more, you start to get used to it though - it's, I suppose, another part of "going global"

I have lots of friends who are originally from that part of the World & I found some of the comments here almost bordering on racism. The truth is that you could say that any accent is irritating depending on your point of view. It's wrong to single out just one & I think this sends out a negative message.

It doesn't bother me if that is thier genuine accent, but I used to date an Indian girl who would fake the Indian accent. That annoyed me. She thought she was being cute, but it just didn't work for her.

Last night I was watching a documentary on TV about the Lions in India. God, I love Indians, but i didn't want to hear that Indian girl's comments, it was just irritating indeed!

The accent doesn't bother me, after all people from all areas have different accents including from region to region in the US. What does bother me is when it effects their English so much that you can't understand what they are saying. It's a frustration issue and I believe it must be just as frustrating for them. It is also frustrating when they don't seem to want to work on it. When learning another language everyone should strive to do it well!

I'm sure if you tried to speak Urdu or Punjabi that you'd sound a bit funny too.
The "speed" of speach is an issue for me, but that is easily resolved by asking the speaker to slow down.
The "accent" doesn't bother me, in fact I think some local English dialects are much worse.

No offense to my fellow Indian friends, it does irritate me a bit.
Maybe they need to slow down a bit whenever they talk to a non-Indian.
