Hi folks, it turns out that I get a statement in the mail today for a $1200 charge on my best buy credit card on 11/26/06 used in Arizona. I don't live in Arizona, I live in California and have never been to Arizona. I called best buy and told them that there is an incorrect charge on my account. They asked me if I had both cards, I said I did and they told me that they would forward the dispute to their fraud department. Upon looking further I realized that I am missing one card, so I called Best Buy and let them know and they said that they would forward it to the fraud department. Best buy said it can take anywhere from 15-60 days to get this resolved as they research this. I am a very anxious person, can someone let me know if I can be liable for this, even though I did nothing wrong except lose a card. Any help would be appreciated tremendously!

I don't speak from experience, and I'm sorry to hear you had to go through this.

But from what I understand, while a formal dispute is investigated, you are not liable for the charge until the outcome of the investigation. Once that's complete and they conclude you were a victim of a crime, chances are they'll remove the balance from your account.

However, you might want to talk to Best Buy and inquire specifically about your situation. Just to be sure.

Good luck!

The same thing happened to my husband it seems that he bought a car in Indianapolis and didn't pay for it.We've never been there ever So to make my story short. Call the police dept, in Arizona and were you live and file an Identity deft report,ASAP and report it to the credit burrows, they will put a block on you SS#
if not that will hurt you SO SO much in the future. hey also get a name of the person that you spoke with at Best Buys.

I am astonished they didn't tell you they would close the account and issue you a new card -- that is standard practice. A new card is issued, and all valid charges are transferred to the new account; disputed charges are held aside until the question of their legitimacy is resolved.

Call the company back and ask for the card to be cancelled and reissued.

no you won't be liable for it. The fraud department will probably be sending you an affidavit for you to fill out and everything will be cleared up when their investigation is over.
