heck yeah.. corn soup and frybread!! corn soup is easier to describe... and a lot of Natives make it differently, but i start out by frying in a soup pot some cut up stew beef and cut up bacon together... i add some cut up potatoes and cut up onion and start cooking those... i start to salt and pepper it some, then... then i add some water (not a whole whole lot!) and then when the potatoes are getting tender, i add a can of white shoepeg corn and a can of gold and white mixed corn. (i like the vacuum packed kind... it tastes a lot fresher to me)..... and frybread isn't too hard, but you might be concerned about its nutritional value for your family.... let's see if i remember the recipe correctly... you might want to check the link below for a frybread recipe... mix up about 2 cups of flour with about a tablespoon and a half of baking powder, and about 1 cup or so of lukewarm water, and a dash or two of salt. let it sit on the counter for about 15 mins. heat up some oil to fry it in. begin to separate it (the dough) into small balls, and lightly coat it in flour. when you're ready to begin frying, gently pull it to flatten it.... and drop it in hot grease.... it should be golden brown on the outside... and should end up fluffy... it took me a few tries to get it down just right... my dad laughed at me on my first try... on my first try it was thick and hard instead of big and fluffy. ick! lol. good luck. also, we like chicken tettrazini.... it's a long recipe to type, but you might search for it on yahoo.com

Why not buy a slow cooker - you can buy the cheapest of ingredients and while you are at work they turn into something amazing!
Italian Tomato soup. Onions, tinned toms, chicken or beef stock, basil, garlic - add rice or pasta for the last hour or so of cooking. Serve with nice bread.
Stew: Any cut of cheap meat, root veggies and potatoes - just fry the meat - dusted in flour with the onions and garlic, put into crockpot, add chopped veggies, potatos and stock.
Chicken: Whole chicken cooked in the crockpot. No meat is wasted as it falls off the bone, and you can use the remaining liquid to make a fantastic soup later.
Failing that, other tried and tested (and cheap) recipes are home made lasagne (dont use bought sauces though - make your own) spag bol (ditto) and traditional family meals such as shepherd pie or what about curry?

For a really quick meal I take leftover chicken cut up or canned chicken chunks and add to cornbread stuffing mix along with a can of corn. Make the stuffing recipe, for quick meal with the base costing about a dollar.
Another quick one that I do is to add a can of tuna to macaroni and cheese mix and put in some onion flakes. I turn on the oven and put the chip nerds(the tiny pieces in the bottom of the potato chip sack that no body wants) on top and heat for about 10 minutes.
I also make a mean stew. Put your stew meat in a roaster pan with a can of Cream of mushroom soup(you can sub a packet of Onion soup mix but you have to add some extra water) put a little water in there to keep it moist. Bake at 325 for about an hour. Then cut up your potatoes, carrotts and onions in about 1 1/2-2" pieces and throw in the pan add some more water if it is gettin at all dry put the lid on the roaster now and bake another hour. Fork the veggies to see when they are done. This can also be done in the crock pot for 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low.

Learn to use biquick. I'm a guy and I love to cook as my wife works nights. We have 2 girls. I started useing bisquick last month...wow, dumplings. Good and filling. Also, I use alot of rice and beans, pasta. You can do alot with 300 bucks- split it up and go shopping twice a month. I go to the store like...7-8 times a month but thats because its next door. I'm working on that, okay?! Also, my kids were very picky. WERE. I don't allow waste and as I'm former military, I don't tolerate picky eaters- they eat whats prepared or go to bed hungry. Here are a few cheap ideas for you, just a few... Chicken and dumplings Ham and beans green beans and ham, potaoes pot roast and veggies veggie soup Tuna noodle cass. Broc. cheese cass All these are cheap and quick and one pot meals. *Oh yeah.....another thing I do thats cheap and the kids love is those canned croisants, rolled with ham and cheese in them.

Go to Foodnetwork.com Some really great and easy recipes can be found there that I've made (I'm not a great cook either, and they turn out fantastic). The ingredients aren't too pricey either, but what's great is that you can find anything there.
If you like Italian food, Giada De Laurentis has some delicious recipes.
Alton Brown's stuff is great, too. And Paula Dean's stuff (most of it) is fairly simple.
Good luck!
Here are a few suggestions from my favorite chefs on the foodnetwork:

Take Anon's corn beef hash recipe, top each plate with a sunny side up egg, serve with tomato slices and your favorite toast (can't beat sour dough though). Not for breakfast anymore.

Here's a good one Buy freezer burritos or you can make your own (it doesn't matter and the price is the same) Put them in a pan, mix sour cream and salsa together and pour over them. Grade cheese on the top. Then put in the oven, on whatever temp. the burritos call for, and cook for about forty five minutes. Stick a fork in them, if it is hot they are done, if it is cold they are not. Easiest meal I know how to make, and I do not like salsa but I love this. Enjoy!
