Who ever told you that has NO concept of the disciple, trust, training, commitment and honor our service men and women have achieved and believe in to be an effective and dedicated fighting force.
What do you think would happen if you tossed these convicted felons (sentence over a year) to fight side to side with professional warrior? Their lack of training, arrogance, respect for no one, their anger and their general stupidity (do you think committing felonies is an act of an intelligent person?) would lead to someone other than the enemy getting killed.
As for dropping them weapons and ammo and let 'em fight!
What...send these criminal out side the wire..into enemy territory 1st with out weapons and then air drop their weapons? Yeah...I'd bet the convicts would hate that and the bad guys would like that.
No. I doubt that a single soldier would want them anywhere near them except 50 meters in front of them and on the sights of their rifle.
Keep them in prison.
And please remember I am not being offensive to you or your asking the question. It is a question you wanted answered. My disdain is directed at the....bozo that told you we should send criminal to fight with honorable men and women.

Absolutely not. Military service is an honorable undertaking. It is also becoming more and more a profession that takes considerable training. The USA has plenty of people who are volunteering to put their lives on the line and sure doesn't need a bunch of thugs running around with guns and ammo.

Does the statement "there is no honor among thieves" mean anything to you? Think for a minute about what you're stating. They have no training, most likely never fired the types of weapons that they'd come across in the military and they're CRIMINALS. Come on you can't be this ignorant.

Personally, I think it is a terrible idea. We are not some 3rd world country. We are the United States of America. We take pride in our military and will not let the lowest members of our society into it. What makes you think we could trust them to fight? They obviously have questionable character already.

No that's a stupid idea. Because probably most of them wouldn't fight, and they would run, and we would never find them again.
That's like setting a man free.
You honestly think a man who has a life sentence will fight for a country, instead of trying to get away????

Not a good idea. First of all, you don't want to give wepons to people that can't behave. Secondly, serving your country should be an honor and should be reserved for upstanding citizens only.
I think that we could have them work on our roads so that we don't have to get stuck in traffic so often.

If they have a felony, they can't tote a gun. Even if given that privilege, they would shoot whomever they wanted to, enemy or friend. That's what got them in prison in the first place.
Come to think of it, didn't they try something like that in WWII?

If they are devious, they will sell their weapons to the Iraqis, and take a cab to the pick-up point. Home free! Bad idea.

Most likely they would instantly surrender to the enemy, turn over all their weapons to the enemy, and thus you would have spent a bunch of money to supply the other side. So no, it would be very dumb.
