The fear of death and mortality pre-dates the idea of hell. The current idea of hell was really laid out by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy, as Dante described the journey through the levels of hell. Realize also that people existed long before Christianity, as did the fear of death.
Animals also fear death, and instinctually strive for their own survival. While the fear of hell is irrational and imaginative at best, it is not the only source for the fear of death.
You site pre-life existence as nothing but darkness, but realize that darkness still requires perception. Descartes is often mis-quoted as having stated "I think, therefore I am". His actual statement was slightly different, but the idea still implies. Because you are able to think, to perceive, to cogitate, you must then exist. However, without existence (i.e. death) you cannot perceive, you cannot think, you can not be.
It is more than people cannot fathom that they will cease to exist. All we know is existence, and we are not capable of experiencing any thought outside of that.

Sweetheart if you worry about death now then you will never be able to live and experience the real experience of life.
Don't worry so much take a deep breathe and take a long look at the world around you and stop and smell the roses every now and then. Cause life is only short if you make it that way. Maybe if you take up Tai chi, it can help you to get in tuned with yourself and allow you to let yourself experience life more purely and slowly, so that you get the full effect.

I know what your saying. The most scary thing I fear is suffering the death. Like burning alive, or drowning, strangled, torture. The moment you know your going to die and suffering the death is scary to me. But we all are going to die someday. The only thing I can tell you is to live in the present and not worry about death. Maybe you can seek professional counseling if your really that concerned. Good luck.

You may have panic disorder. I had this problem and I would not go to sleep at night because I thought I would die in my sleep. Then I quit driving because I thought I would get in a wreck and die.
Bottom line is this - seek some couseling and possibly medication to help with an imbalance. Find God and pray.
That is the best advice that I can give you. I take medication, go to counseling and I trust in God and know that He has a plan for me and I can't leave until He is ready for me to.

You are here because God put you here to help expand His kingdom. You can only get over your fear of dying if you believe there is something else when you die. Read the bible, go to a nice Community church or Evangelical Free church and start living. Do you want to spend your whole life worrying about dying or live your life that you've got right now. Take it from me, I have the same fear from time to time and the only thing that eases my mind are the promises God gives to me in the bible, and the never-ending miracles He shows me.
God Bless

Get some counseling, it will help you. Whether we like it or not, nobody gets out alive. Accept that and live your life to the fullest. Never part from a friend or loved one in anger, and appreciate the small things.

By saying, "I am not dying yet. I'll live a life the way it's supposed to be lived and then when I die my tombstone can read "he/she lived""
