Best age for a tattoo is 95 or over. At that point you'll look so bad anyway that even a badly done tattoo won't mess up your appearance a lot. And, you won't have to live with it too long if you change your mind about the design.
Tattoos are basically permanent. Think about what kind of tattoo you might have wanted 5 years ago. Five years from now will the tattoo you want today seem just as stupid?
I know a lady now in her 50s with a lot of visible biker tattoos (arms, neck, hands, legs, and ?) from her teens and 20s. She'd pay anything to get them off without all the scarring that "erasing" tattoos causes.

In most states you have to be 18 in order to get a tattoo. However, in some states you can get a tattoo with a parent signature when you are 16 yrs old. It all depends on your state and the laws therein. You should do some more research with your parents and decide wisely. Make sure it's something that you want for the rest of your life. It costs more to get rid of 1 than to get it done.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Careful on your choice of tattoo, man. Personally, I would kinda like to get a tat, but unless it's something extremely deep and meaningful, I'm just waiting it out.
If you're sure you wanna get one, then I just reccommend something symbolic; colors tend to fade and/or change unless you "renew" the tattoo every few years, and pictures of people or things tend to take on a different meaning over the course of your life. That tat is still gonna be around until your an old geezer, and when your grandchild asks what your tattoo is, and you reply "a marijuana leaf", you may begin to question your choice of art.
Anyways, just a few pointers. I'm not sure, I think you have to be 18 years old reguardless, which I really think you should do anyways. But if it's legal, and you've set your mind on getting a tat, then I wish ya good luck on it :)

This question varies from state to state. I know in minnesota you have to be 18 to get one on your own. Or 16 with a parental gardian with you to sign the forms. For piercings you can be 16 on your on or 12 with a parents concent. I recieved my first piercing( tounge) when i was 13. In order for me to have that done, my mom had to be there. But like i said it varies from state to state. So my best advice is to talk to the tattoo shop you want to do it and ask them. In iowa you have to be 18 no matter what so just ask.

Wow... where do you guys live? I'm 14 and live in singapore. I got 2 tats, 2 ear piercings and one on my lip. I didn't have to go underground or get my parents to sign anything. My parents weren't with me when I got them. As far as I know, there is no legal age here but there are one or 2 shops that want you to be 16 and above for tats in case your parents look for trouble after that.

The only way you can get a tatoo before you turn 18 is if your parents go with you and sign a release form
