I think your real question is how much you should budget for gasoline. The price for regular unleaded in California is currently averaging $2.50 per gallon .

As you are renting a car, it will most likely use regular unleaded and I would count on 20 miles to the gallon for your overall trip (assuming a typical mid-size sedan).

The result is that you should budget 12.5 cents for each mile you plan on traveling.

It all depends on where you are in CA. I live on the coast in the middle of the state. Gas here is almost $3 a gallon. Some places in San Francisco is closer to $2.50 a gallon, and in the LA area, there is a range from $2.50-$3.00.
Also- this is just for Regular Unleaded. If you get the high grade gas it will caost you more (up to a dollar more in some cases).

Also- if you have a Costco membership you can get your gas cheeper- I have one in my town with the gas station and I can get my gas for almost 20 cents cheeper a gallon sometimes.

Enjoy your trip! :)

go to www.gasbuddy.com This website allows you to select a location and then gives you the day's high and low. National averages and other data are also included. Gas prices in California often vary significantly. In many areas, gas prices can vary by 20-30 cents per gallon or more within a very small area.

Unleaded regular is about $2.30 to $2.75 a gallon or about 65 cents a liter US. Depends where you buy. Next to a freeway is usually the most expensive, look for the cut rate stations if you want to pay less. so stay away from the Shell or 76 Union stations etc.

unfortunately, we don't buy it by the litre, but by the gallon, which is about 3 litres, I think. It's about $2.97 a gallon here in Hawaii, should be much cheaper in California. A friend told me he was paying about $2.60 a gallon, but that was a couple of weeks ago. It varies from one station to another within the same block, and more from town to town.

In the U.S. gas is measured by the gallon. That being said, for
example, the going rate for gasoline in the state of California is
betweeen $2.25/gal. and $2.99/gal.

1 Litre = 0.26 Gallon
1 Gallon = 3.8 Litres

We're averaging about $2.50 - $3.00 a gallon in Southern California at the moment.

Keep in mind that American cars get worse fuel economy than you're accustomed to. Our government (EPA) gives fuel economy ratings (in miles per gallon), but many drivers get 10-20% worse.

Also your car rental company is likely to either "up-sell" you to a nicer vehicle, or simply give you a nicer vehicle if they're out of stock of what you requested. And that nicer vehicle will of course get worse mileage. (er, fuel economy I mean.)

Ain't it funny that we call em "English" units of measure?

It was $1.95 a week or so ago, but it's up to $2.04 today. That's per gallon.

It always goes up near the holidays because people travel more.
