These websites should give you all the information you are looking for. If you don't find all the answers, ask again here and I will answer your questions. Shetland Sheepdogs (long hair) are great with children, so are Rat Terriers (short hair). In general, the smaller breeds live longer than the large breeds. Most dogs make good guard dogs. Keep in mind that long haired breeds need a lot of grooming. Poodles and other breeds need clipping. It can get expensive every 6-8 weeks. If you don't want to spend a fortune on grooming, get a short hair breed. Dogs with flopped ears have problems with ear infections, long backed dogs have disc problems, Chihuahuas have temperment and knee problems, so be sure you know what medical problems the breed you are intending to buy has problems with.
Please do not buy from a puppy mill, and neuter your puppy. When you buy a puppy you do not know exactly what the personality is going to be. If you adopt a dog from a shelter you will know by interacting with this dog if it is suitable for your family. Also you can "try" it out and if it doesn't fit into your lifestyle you can return the dog for another one. The best of luck to you!

There are a few websites you can go to. But the best way to find out more info on a dog is to read up about them. Alot of the time a breeder will say that they are good with animals, but all dogs have different personalities and traits. Some website you can go to are nextdaypets.com, terrificpets.com, if you are in canada there is a good web site called kijii. Or if you are not looking for a pure breed go down to you local animal shelter. The most shelters asses each dog to help find a home best suited for the dogs personality. I hope find what you are looking for.

Akc has very good descriptions and in the description it describes temperament. Generally if it says good with people it means all people (small and large).Try Wikipedia. You might try books if you can not find what you are looking for on the web.
