The people who dont know what you are taking about apparently are not from NOLA.
New Orleans is very mysterious... its the VooDoo capital of the US. and do you mean the voodoo queen ? her name is Marie Laveau. You can visit her grave .. i heard hers is the top 3rd most visited grave in the US .. lol.. Elvis is # 1 and JFK is #2.
but Nola is very old with alot of history.. and also gruesome history.
Nearly the whole french quarter is haunted. My boyfriend is from Detroit.. when he first moved here he didn't know much about New Orleans so one of the things we did was go around the french quarter on a ghost hunt .. lol.. THeres a little street called Pirates Alley that we went to one day.. i've always heard stories of the street on tv but never went myself. so we went into one of the bars, which was empty, and asked the bartender if she's ever had an experiences.. she told us so many things. You can ask any locals and they'll tell you .. many of them will have stories.
If you ever visit.. theres voodoo shop that does great tours .. their website is http://hauntedhistorytours.com/
dont limit yourself to just the haunted history.. its not just the hauntings we're famous for. If you ever come down have a great trip and remember...

New Orleans have what I like to call living history. It is a very old city that have not changed much. There is alot of history with the city too. Marie Laveau the Voodoo Queen of NOLA plays a big part in the history of the city. It is a beautiful city alive and rich with culture. It is also a city that is spiritually and religiously aware. It really is a melting pot of culture. I loved it when I was there and I do plan to go again.

One thing could be the way that the dead are buried.
They are put in above ground crypts and because of the atmospheric conditions the bodies decompose rapidly and the crypts are re-used 1 year later.
Some of these crypts are very elaborate and demand quite a large rental fee from the family that owns them.
It is well worth a visit to New Orleans just for some of the history never mind the partying.

It cannot be explained. I just went and saw. It is charming, and spooky at the same time. Haven't been since before katrina, next summer I plan on 3 days of vacation there.

Stuff!, when one dabbles in voo-doo or other mythical magic One does not have to be in New Orleans to experience it. It ties in with voo-doo because of most the citizens are Haitian descent
