People say that meth smells like cat urine or animal urine of some kind. The fact is that when meth is actually cooking it smells like anhydrous ammonia. anhydrous ammonia is the liquid chemical used in the actual cooking process to turn ephedrine or psuedoephedrine into methamphetamine. What you more than likely were smelling was the waste from the cooking process. All types of wet and dry chemicals are used in the total process.Waste chemicals when disposed of can contaminate the soil or building where it was cooked for years, unless it is cleaned up properly. It can also contaminate any person or animal that walks or goes through the area where it was made be it inside or outside..Finished meth does smell somewhat like animal urine. Also there is a step in the process where red devil lye is used and mixed with salt this can smell like animal urine. If you see any containers in the area like a 2 liter soda bottle or gas can with a hose attached call the police imediately do not touch it. this type of continer can give off a urine smell, it is acid and is capiable of severely burning a person or animal. The acid in the container that produces the smell can be inhanced by the effect of temprature and wind on the container. I did not go into the total cooking process but hopefully this is enough information to help you. You may want to look out for the above described containers and hoses because they are very dangerous if found contact local law enforcement right away !!

Methamphetamine labs, smell a lot like burning Styrofoam, now I'm not sure if a bunch of horse urine female or not smells like burning Styrofoam, but that smell is the dead giveaway for meth labs. The labs, most have gone portable are extremely dangerous. They are full of base chemicals like Sodium hydroxide to volatile chemicals like Red Phosphorus. Any slight screw up in this lab procedure can turn any of these chemicals into deadly / explosives fireballs. Remember these are scientific experiments performed by scientist that have been awake for weeks using disposable crock-pots in a rural parking area or vacant lot. Call the police if suspicious, if you do not trust the local town police then call the state police, most of this rural stuff falls under their jurisdiction anyway, but warn them about a possible methlab so they can bring the proper protective gear.

Could be the neighbor attempted to make meth using the 1970's version called P2P. It had a rancid smell of urine. Hells Angels were famous for this method. If you still have the odor, I would contact your local law enforcement and have it investigated. It could be the neighbor was dumping his chemicals in the area and you have a toxic waste problem that will need the state's attention.

I'm not sure about horse urine...but methamphetamine in it's precusure and manufacturing stage has a very strong odor, I'd call it more chemically. (I've never smelt a horse's urine, sorrry.) Anyway..if you have suspicions, call your local law enforcement agency and tell them what you have said here. The manufacturing of meth is very volatile and unstable. It is very combustable and dangerous. Stay clear and let the police handle it. Good luck.

just to let you know, it takes a chemical team to clean up a meth lab. Any law enforcement agency would be glad to take a look and even give you tips on how to spot a meth lab. Just be careful if you come upon an active meth lab. Law enforcement have been shot when they accidentally came upon one.
One more small fact: Takes just over an hour to make a batch of meth.

It could be the muriatic acid or the lye used in the process.
The cold wouldn't take the smell away if it was still cooking. If you smell it again, try to get away from the smell, it is very dangerous to breathe.
Make an anonymous tip (from a payphone) to your local police department. Meth labs are extremely dangerous, those gases are toxic, and if the lab explodes someone could be killed.
edit: Whatever you do, do NOT go over and try to investigate it yourself!!! If you stumble on a meth lab and there are people there, they are probably not going to let you leave peacefully.
Meth labs are treated as hazardous material scenes by police and fire departments because the chemicals inside can kill you. Stay away from there and let the police handle it.

Maybe you should report it. If it's not meth it could be something else that's dangerous. Better to find out I think...Those labs can blow up and those chemicals can cause damage just by smelling it they way you did..Good luck
