linoleum has been well bonded for in excess of 20 years. Will be replaced with carpet which cannot be laid over the top.

I did the same thing. The old things really stick, plus you're dealing with old bonding agents which could include asbestos. I had to take it down to the subfloor and replace the underlay with plywood. It entailed attacking it with a spade and pitchfork, and removing the tile with wood attached, in pieces. It was worth it; the resulting floor (laminate) looks great.
