You will get the farthest with Spanish and it is easier to learn as the rest of the comments indicate.
However, French is a beautiful language as well. You probably will only speak French in certain parts of the planet.
Spanish is almost as universal as English.
I say pick Spanish

I'm French but I would advise you to take Spanish, which is more widespread and the official language of more countries. It is more useful, more practical. It all depends on whether you need it in your job or just want to learn it for your own pleasure. In the latter case, choose French. If you like reading, you'll enjoy the vast French literature and its many world-class authors (Hugo, Zola, Balzac, Proust, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Voltaire, Pascal etc) in all fields ranging from poetry to philosophy. As for the so-called difficulties in learning French (pronunciation- and spelling-wise, for instance), taking on a whole new language has never been easy but millions did it before you and I'm sure they don't regret their efforts. French will also help you know your English better as about 70% of your lexicon comes from old and modern French. I taught my language in Scotland and Ireland for 5 years and I can assure you pronunciation is but a minor problem if you just know where to place the tip of your tongue to produce sounds like "u" or "r", which my pupils often had trouble with in the beginning. Anyway, Spanish is far more complex than it seems, even though the first steps will probably be simpler. It's a beautiful language and very dynamic. If you're an American, learn it first and then French will look easy as pie to you, as far as grammar and syntax are concerned. Whichever you pick, I hope you enjoy it to its full ;)

I think Spanish is much easier and we have many similar words, just pronounced differently. Also, as you want to study abroad you will have many more options for where to go and nicer ones too.
I lived in the Canary Islands and having never known Spanish picked it up very quickly. Also the Spanish appreciate people trying to learn, they are patient and encourage you.
Unfortunately my experience in France was not so good and we had quite a few problems. One being that they were very rude to my husband, who speaks very good French but not 100% fluent and then tried to rip us off claiming he didn't fully understand French.
I appreciate that not all the French are like this but it's just that in my experience I was more welcomed and helped/encouraged in Spain.
Good luck with whatever you choose!!

I'm French, but I'd recommend you learn Spanish. It's easier to learn and more spoken around the globe. Speaking French since I'm a child, it's easy for me, but it's a nightmare for most people to learn, seen as the grammar is complicated. It's still the most beautiful language in the world...

Take French. For one thing, not many take the class. It seems to be popular now to take Spanish. So, you get more attention in the class which should make the language easier to learn!

Spanish is the native language of almost 20% of the United States - so it gets my vote for usefulness. I speak French, and very rarely ever use it. And then why bother learning it.

Spanish is definitely more useful (dozens of countries speak it, and millions of people here in the U.S.) I also think it's a much prettier language than French, despite the common perception that French is the "language of love." Think of all the hot Spanish-speaking celebrities... doesn't that sound better than the nasal-gutteral-growly thing that French does? Anyway that's my opinion. And if you learn Spanish, you can listen to Shakira! Yay for Shakira!
