Hi, maybe I'm an idealist, but I am looking for an affordable digital camera that does really, really well in general and especially in concert capacity. I'd like for it to be small, thin, and have a good zoom (optical and digital). Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The best camera for what you want, is the Fujifilm Finepix F30.
It does really well in low-light, while handheld and without flash at ISOs of 800 & 1600 (and 3200 but not really useable)...and has an amazing battery life of up to 580 shots!
It has 6MP and 3x optical zoom. Which is ok if you are fairly close to the action. (Digital zoom is useless, so don't give it another thought).

However, there is one very frustrating thing that is missing from this camera. It has no optical viewfinder!
Normally this would be perfectly fine, but the LCD on this camera has a high resolution and is very bright. Hardly inconspicuous! Such a stupid omission, especially if you are trying to remain unnoticed.
Most concerts will not allow cameras in...so there is a very big risk sneaking one in.

Some artists are ok with it...for instance, Robbie Williams (while in Australia), will allow digital cameras & video recorders in, as long as they are not professonal quality.
So, the F30 is the best compact camera for low-light situations (worth it, just for that capability alone).
Good luck

Dream camera setup for concerts Canon 1Ds MK2 with a 200mm F/1.8, 35mm F/1.8, 70-200mm F/2.8, 17-55mm F/2.8, 10-22mm, and the 16-35mm. But that is going to cost over $16000.

So I would say get a Fuji F30 due the fact that it is small and has a ISO of 3200 on it. Which lets you shoot in low light.

Yea, good zoom does not mix with small and thin. You will need a DSLR with a few lbs lens to get a good zoom in low light. Or at least something like a Canon S3 IS to get something "ok" in a concert. And I don't think you can pass security with those cameras. Point and shoot compact camera? Forget it.

i imagine that is how a range of of persons sense now. at the same time as my little Canon S400 died very last 3 hundred and sixty 5 days i did not replace it. i take advantage of an Xperia telephone for random snaps... that can absolutely exercising uncomplicated truly nicely in reliable mild, and a DSLR for further extreme issues. yet I absolutely have printed telephone pictures in the experience that they are the purely ones of the tale accessible. (first-type or obtrusive grunge for paintings... something that tells the tale for information). perhaps i'm tempted with the aid of the recent Canon SX50 with its 1000mm zoom for random flora and fauna images, even if it nonetheless can not replace a DSLR and is purely no longer able to seize quick challenge flow at that length.

If you mean "concert photography" from your seat, forget it. Besides the fact that you risk losing your camera to security, you will not get a very good image anyhow unless you are in the front row.
