I'm not sure where other people get their answers, but I have been dealing with this issue with my doctor.
Any time the top number is 180 or above it is time to go to the ER. Whether it is a spike in bp or constant. There are risks regardless. Risks are just that "risks" not guarantees. My pressure was 220/134 Friday and I haven't stroked, but I am aware of the dangers and I'm trying to bring it down. I don't know why you r asking but a doctor is your best source. Good luck and good health............

A stroke is not caused by a sudden raise in BP it is caused from having a constant BP which causes a bulging of veins/arteries in the brain which after a spike or for no reason at all POP. Anything from 150 over 100 and up can be the culprits.
