I am the youngest of 12 people working in a child care center. I probably work the most hours out of anyone, because I feel guilty saying no, when someone asks me to cover a shift. But now I need someone to cover my shift tomorrow night. So I called all the other employees, I was able to get a hold of 6, they all said that they "think they are coming down with something." Am I crazy, or is this really not an acceptable excuse, yes this is cold season, and it is inevitable, everyone will get sick, but it is one thing when you are sick, and when you just "think" you are getting sick. Now I cant get anyone to cover my shift, after the dozens of shifts I've picked up for them. I just dont think that it is fair, or a good excuse, especially when 5 other people are using it. What do you "think"?

The reason I feel so obligated to cover thier shifts is because I AM the youngest, and they all have this attitude that the youth of the world doesn't pull thier weight. They are all 30+, I'm 19. And because I figured that one of them would repay the favor when I need them to.

it is called blue flu when the police use it, it is not a good excuse and I do not accept it from my employees, but you need to remember who refused to work for you and when they want you to work for them, tell them that when you needed off they came up with a maybe sickness and that you will not work for them.
don't make an excuse just tell them flat out why you do not want to work for them.

It sucks, but it looks like you'll have to work.

Since their not scheduled for the shift, "I think I'm coming down with something" is not an excuse for missing work. It's just an excuse for not helping you out. And even though you've helped them out a lot, it doesn't mean that they will be willing to help you. In the future, don't be so quick to cover their shifts unless you need the extra money. Your not obligated to cover just because your the youngest. They can find someone else.

And ordinarily, this wouldn't be a good excuse. I would still make my staff come in. I've had to come in with really bad colds and once with the ends of the flu because no one else could work. (I work in a small store and only have 1 person per shift). So I don't care about "I think I'm coming down with something." Don't even bother calling me at home for this. Drag your butt in to work, and only call me if your really sick.

Well, after many years of dedication, long hours and dependability, I've found that I wasn't appreciated at all. No one cares. Do your best because of your work ethics and think you are coming down with something once in awhile. I call it a mental health day. Most workers these days are looking out for number one because most companies do not take care of their employees. I doubt there is a promotion, increase in pay or pension waiting for you either. Do the great job you are known for and nothing more. They don't pay you to do favors. Good luck and believe me;it's everywhere.

I think it's a good reason, if it's true. No reason to spread the cold germs around to the kids.

I agree with you that people should be willing to cover your shift once in a while if you cover theirs. But at least you got the additional money. I hope you find a sub.

These people who don't want to cover your shift because they think they're coming down with something just don't want to cover your shift. They aren't "missing" work when its not their shift. I think you should stop covering their shifts for them when they ask you to.

I think I would still keep on covering for them when they ask. BUT, NOT feel guilty saying 'no.' That's a lie from satan, himself, making you feel guilty.

Respect yourself. If you HAVE to---don't even ASK them anymore.

That excuse sucks. You would think there is something more original.

It is a pathetic excuse. You need to learn to say no because it sounds like they are taking advantage of you.
