Ok, so I'm trying to lose MAD weight. I'm 5'3" and used to be 135lbs. pre-baby. I had my son 4yrs. ago & was at 150 post-baby. Well, I stopped taking care of myself & am now at like 180. I'm a size 14-16. Here's the thing, I'm pear-shaped. I have a big butt and big thighs and "saddle-bags". Just recently I started to get a belly and big arms. I HATE it. I need to lose the weight by April for a wedding & for my own self-esteem.
I know I have to eat right & work out, but how long do I work out for & what are the BEST workouts? Do I work out before I eat breakfast or after? Is it best to do it in the morning or evening? Do I have to use weights or resistance bands? I don't want to be on a fad-diet, like no carbs or a vegetarian diet.
I've tried the Slim-fast shakes & they helped me lose 14 lbs. in the past, but I want to do it the right way. I have a pilates video and the Power90 program, along w/an excersice ball & resistance bands. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Cardio is the best work outs for losing weight and burning fat. Depending on your fitness level you can start by walking and then move to jogging and then running. Also biking, swiming are good activies also that don't put as much strain on your joints. Obviously the more you exercise the more weight you lose so that is up to you. Lifting weights or resistance bands are also a good way to build up your lean muscle mass which will help you burn more calories. Its a personal preference as to what you want to use. Since your a woman you probably don't want to bulk up on weights but even light weights, resistance bands and sit-ups, push-ups would be a good way to start. It doesn't matter when you work out but avoid working out too close to when you sleep or else you won't be able to sleep. Exercise helps wake you up. Also you can incorporate your pilates/resistance bands/exercise ball as your workout along with some cardio. Don't go on any crazy fad diets. There is a reason they don't work. Everything in moderation. A low fat diet works really well. Just try to eat foods that are lower in fat and avoid eating too much saturated/trans fats. Stick with a low-fat diet and plenty of exercise and you will lose weight. It is a healthy way to lose weight and just remember you can't lose it all in a week. It takes time but stay motivated and keep it up and you will eventually reach your goal.

I understand where you're coming from. I weigh 170 and am trying to get down to 135 by next May. I tried dieting with some success before, but even though I lost inches, I was pretty flabby. I was reading an article earlier this evening that said most people need to exercise 60 minutes a day to lose weight, 30 to maintain. I know you must not have much time with your son, but you can fit short workouts into your day. I love the Quickfix series of videos. The workouts are divided into 10 min autonomous sections. There are other short workouts you can try. I would suggest looking at amazon.com and collagevideo.com for reviews and lists of video.
This is winter and its hard to get motivated to get moving, but walking can really be one of the best exercises, esspecially if you keep up the pace.
Remeber portion control is important. Really measure what you're eating so you know how much you're eating. If practical, buy smaller plates and bowls and cups. I was reading that when plates are smaller, you put less food on the plates and eat less. Its hard to watch what you eat in a family when no one else is trying to eat healthily, so why not try to get other's you know to eat better? I understand Weight Watchers helps people keep weight off more than other diets.
Anyway, Good Luck!!! You can do it!

Concerning exercise, it doesn't matter when you do it, just dont do it too late in the evening when your body is winding down. Weights or resistance bands is fine, and do arobic exercise as well.
For diet, dont listen to those special diets out there like no carb, those are unhealthy. Also Slim Fast is not really a good diet drink, it still has sugar and bad stuff. Avoid those diet bars because they have sugar and artificial ingredients which are bad for your body. Find shakes that are not sweetened with sugar like Spirutein or something like that I guess. But if you avoid these ingredients I know you will lose weight: sugar, hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors/colors. Also avoid fast food and you should buy milk and meat that dont have hormones or nitrates/nitrites. Also drink plenty of water and eat a HIGH fiber diet, as that will definately help you lose weight because the fiber sweeps away all the bad toxins in your body. So avoid white bread (especially those spongy ones with the conditioners and bleach) because that will produce toxins in the body and since theres no fiber to sweep it away, it turns to lumpy fat. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables too. Also instead of 3 meals a day, break up to 6 little meals a day, (like breakfast, then snack, lunch, then snack, then light dinner). This will increase your motabolism. Use herbs and spices to increase your motabolism too like chile or cinnimon.
I guarentee you if you do this you will lose weight and be healthy.

The best way is to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day and exercise with wieghts and aerobics. Your meals should consist of Lean Protien and Complex carbs ( like Chicken and Brown Rice ). Pilates and Power90 are ok programs, but you are still going to need to hit a gym at some point to do some real lifting.
You may want to pick up the book "Body for Life" or actually i think they have one specifically for women now.

he metabolic powers particular foods have to make your physique burn more body fat.” It is a way of rating foods, primarily based on “how numerous calories your physique is going to burn just breaking down the nutrients each time you consume a certain meals.”
Therefore, you are not alone in this battle.
