I think there are still biases against people of color in America, not just black, but Latino, Asian, Native American or mixed race as well. Programs like Affirmative Action were not conceived to give black people an unfair advantage, but rather to remove the considerable advantage white people had in areas like the workplace, education, etc. While it has succeeded to a point, there are still many issues regarding the hiring of minorities in certain types of jobs. And especially in professions where the majority of the rank-and-file workers are of a racial minority.
The bigger problem I have is that there are many black people (not all of them, but I have personally encountered quite a few) that complain about bias against them, cry racism, and pull the whole "poor me" routine, yet when they are confronted with the chance to look past race and do the right thing, they turn around and discriminate against Latinos, Asians or Native Americans. And I'm sure there are Latinos and Asians and Native Americans who have done the same to those of other races as well. It's just a part of society, as ugly as it is, that we will have to endure because we are such a multi-cultural nation and our own national "American" culture has so many different origins and influences.

Many times that seems like the case BUT, if you look at the broader picture, you will see that the adversities that blacks (as well as some other minorities) have to undergo daily far out weights any advantage they receive. Further on, even when a black person succeeds financially and professionally he or she is still treated as "black". This is something that tears deep inside. Can you imagine what it is like to look into your son's or daughter's eyes while you are being abused? To not know if you are getting pulled over by the next cop just because?
Would you question advantages given to handicap? Probably not, though they are frequently "unfair" too. The point is, these advantages are not meant to equalize, but should be meant to compensate. And it is not a compensation for something that happened in the past, but for the everyday life.
Let me ask you something, if you could, would you trade your race to black?
And I am white, not that it should matter.

In some aspects people of color do.
On entrance exams for colleges. African Americans get 20 points automatically. But certainly most (not all) white people have an easier time with the police. Doesnt mean white boy dont get his butt kicked by the local law enforcer. Every person in this country has it tough unless you got a rich daddy. Earning a living is tough. Its even tougher if your a young uneducated (white or black) man or woman in a world where they want you to have a freaking degree so you can make change at the local McDonalds as the rich company executive rides through the drivethru in his Mercedes. No one gets there overnight unless your born into it.
In the parts of the U.S. that are gang infested its gonna be hard for someone to get a job when all they know is the street. So thats where people stay (white or black) Poverty doesnt know any color. And money dont either. Plenty of people of ALL colors that have good life and plenty of ALL colors who dont. God bless.

That Melanie person (on the first page) made me throw up. Jealous of black people? Sorry, but no. No way. Absolutely not. That is truly disgusting and I found it extremely offensive.
The only ones being treated unfairly these days is WHITE people. And to anyone who cannot see it....well.....all I gotta say is there's something wrong with you. Blacks need to get over the past. When they do, the world will be a much better place.

I don't think there is an advantage or disadvantage. I think the history of our country and our culture has set the foundation of how certain people are treated. It also depends on which area of the country you are in, because in the south racism is still alive and well. It may not be direct and in your face so much as it was in the 60's for example, but it does still exist.
To respond to the person who said Affrimative Action is an advantage, it is mere ignorance to not know why this was created: Simply to level the playing field in the workforce. Because until companies were forced to be diverse in their employee workforce, blacks were not getting hired by companies that were 'traditional' in their ways. Black people are expected to work twice as hard because the stereotype is that blacks are lazy, and if they don't prove otherwise this is considered to be true.
And if you want to know why certain television stations exist, it is not to be unfair but b/c it was necessary. Some TV networks did not allow certain programming to be aired, so stations were created to air the programs needed and wanted by black people.
Also the BET station is now run by Viacom, the same company that owns MTV , Nickelodeon and CBS, so before people go on thinking that blacks have control of their own stations and other things, do your homework. In the end it all comes down to the almighty dollar.
So NO, blacks do not have an unfair advantage, if everyone were less concerned with the color of someone's skin and more concerned with what is in someone's heart and head, questions like these would not need to be answered.

Yes, sometimes.
With jobs, it depends on if the person hiring is black or white. I hate to say that but its true. They can say I am wrong all they want but they know that its true as well.
Also, with kids at school. A white teacher is more apt to take the black childs side on an argument because they are so afraid of being accused of racism. They will never assume the white child is not at fault. The white child will have to prove his or herself, but the black child would not have to prove anything. A black teacher will assume it is the white child's fault because of racism and because they stick together more than white people.
White people will give up their own to get ahead or to show face. A black person will not. They are stronger, sorry to say--but they do have the advantage in some areas over white people.

There is more of an issue these days with American verses non American. The non American is getting the upper hand and the government is letting this happen! The illegal can come here and get free medical care, section 8 housing and food stamps. Americans are not afforded such luxuries. I live in Texas and many employers out here advertise that they prefer Spanish speaking applicants. Who is at an unfair advantage? I say it is the American of all races!

Yeah its called the Glass Celing but this goes with most minorities. The Asians have dubbed it for awhile as the "bamboo ceiling". In part of the South Blacks have to get out by Sun down. I know because I have watched this first hand. I am Asian and I think its wrong to treat others so bad, Those that claim this is not happening need to open their eyes.

You already know the answer. There is a double standard against whites in this country that's sickening. Anything any other race does, if whites do it they're suddenly racist. And it's not reverse-discrimination, it's simply discrimination. Blacks have many things especially for their race and no other. Organizations (NAACP), Magazines (JET, Ebony), TV Stations (BET), Radio Stations, College Funds (UNCF), Clothing Lines (FUBU - For Us By Us), Holidays (Martin Luther King Day), Black History Month, Miss Black American Pageant, and don't forget Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action that gives blacks an unfair advantage over anyone else based solely on skin color. If a white person based anything solely on skin color you can bet he'd be branded a racist. Last I looked getting ahead should be based on merit and skill not skin color. Imagine whites trying to start up any of these for whites only? They would be labeled a racist organization and shut down! Also take into account what other races can call us but we can't speak a negative word against them! When they say anything it's freedom of speech when we say it it's racism! Take Michael Richards for example (Kramer). I realize he said negative comments first, however, they did respond with calling him racist terms as well and not one news program has ridiculed them for that! Double standard loud and clear. It's ok for anyone to call whites whatever they want but if we call them something we are racists. Well, I'm proud of my race and they can call me whatever they want.

They do get an unfair advantage over white people, because they are considered disadvantaged. As a result they get treated differently. The get higher social welfare payments, places reserved for them at colleges and heaps of other small benifits along the way - i would call that unfair advantage.
Sure the governement thinks this "supports" them. But ultimately they ARE treated differently... the biggest mistake is throw money at problems. Education is the true freedom.
Equality, is about treating all people equally. Yes black people have an unfair advantage over white people. not majorly, but they do.
