Not all that rare, though as a general group doctors tend to edge towards being workaholics. Once you finish 80+ hour weeks in training, 55 hour weeks seem like nothing for decades to come. But don't look for people in solo or small group practices to work part-time. The overhead monster must be fed. You may find that you have to work 25 or 30 hours a week to pay for office expenses and insurance premiums before you make a cent for yourself.

During med school and residency - no. But once you're in practice - especially if you have partners in a group, you can because you all cover for each other - or you can in essence job share with another doctor in the group.

Yes you can but unless you are rich and don't need to take out a lot of student loans to get thru med school like most doctors, you will have about $900,000 worth of debts just from med school. Most doc. have to work those hours to pay off the loans from school. but go for it
