I understand the reasons they don't drink it. But why do they try to keep other people from engaging in behavior they consider harmful?

I think it's a misconception that evangelicals are against alcohol because it's alcohol. It's addictive to a large number of the population, leads to drunk driving accidents, more often than not leading to death or serious injury. People who drink alcohol are five times more likely to commit a violent act than when they are sober. People when drunk are also more likely to commit physical abuse against thier spouses and children when drunk. Alcoholism is a disease with only one cure, abstinence. I don't see why reminding society of these facts is so wrong. If an evangelical makes a person think twice about driving drunk, who cares if their motivation is religion? They may have just prevented serious injury or death to the driver as well as potential victims.

the bible does not teach against drinking, it does say that the elders should not be drunkards, and the pastors should not drink hard liquor.
Paul did tell Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach.

They think they have to fix the world.What they are forgetting is God gave everyone free will. Besides, Jesus' first miracle was to turn water into wine.
