My grandfather asked me this when I was about 8....

sadly he passed before I got an answer....

Can anyone help?

PART 1
Do you believe in god?

(my answer was yes)

PART 2

Do you believe he can do all things?

(my answer was yes)

PART 3
Then can God create a rock so big even he can't move it?

I was unsure and upset, he said he would answer when I was older. I am pretty sure I know it, I just thought I would throuw it out there......

I was just thinking maybe someone knows where it came from... anything???

I think that he was just trying to tell you not to believe everything that you are told with regards to religion...

Even as the most devout Christian you really still have to interpret what you are taught in church in your own way...

The first two parts of his question, when asked to an 8 year old, can really show that you are just believing what you are told...the third part was to make you think

I'm not sure who came up with that question, and I have an answer for it which helps me. God is an infinite being, and all-powerful, for whom nothing is impossible. Therefore I have faith that he could both create a rock too big to move and then move it, and then create an even bigger rock too big to move and move that one and do so infinitely and still have more than enough time left over to give me that answer as well as look after all humans who have ever lived, who are alive today, and all who will ever be alive. God has no limits, has no end and is far greater than mere mortals can possibly imagine.

It's very interesting. Wish I could help with the origin.

I think the answer to it, is no, God can do all things, so there couldn't be a rock that he could not move. Because God is Omnipotent. All powerful.

Of course, if God wanted things to be that way, then there would be. Can't speak for him, but I can't see a logical reason why God would do that.

It's a beautiful memory, isn't it? You must have had a beautiful relationship with you're Dad.

Yes, I know. It comes from a verse in the Bible. Mark 11:23
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

I think your grandfather must have been wise to save the best for last. This verse means that you can trust God to work out problems in your life that may loom as large as a mountain. It may be an impossible situation; yet you put your trust in the living God who is able to move/flatten any mountain.

Another verse goes along with this one.
Philippians 4:19
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

And another,
Romans 8:37
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

And another,
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

I had similar questions in my calculus class with division by zero, complex numbers, and infinity. These were equations that were impossible, but somehow necessary to complete calculations. Therefore mathematics itself had a way of illustrating to me the unfathomable depths of who God is. Or take a mirror and hold it up to a mirror. Where does it end? I don't know the answer to your question but it does illustrate a God of incomprehensible power and authority.

That's quite a hard question, it took me about half an hour to think it over before coming up with an answer. I also discussed it with my family and this is what we came up with;

It's simple, this question has no answer, for the question itself is wrong and contradicts itself. This is a question asked by a human and therefore falls short of an answer that God is only able to provide. It is God who is capable of doing anything and no human comes close to a minute fraction of his power.

No effect is greater than it's source. But why would He? Kind of goes against his nature. I know he can create a rock big enough to squash me, so I don't worry about such things.

One answer could be the earth. As it is continuosly changing and so are morals and beliefs of people. There are too many religions and opinions now to all be affected by the same God. So in technical terms the Earth (being a bit like a giant spinning rock) cannot be moved by God. But that's only my view. :) Hope it helped.

Only if God said "I will not move this rock."

He has given His word on several things. He sometimes rebukes or disciplines, but He holds true to His word.
