The chemicals relax the hair. It also weakens it so if you color it you don't want to do it. Both processes will break and dry your hair out. If you do it, get it done professionally, not with an over the counter product. I use a ceramic flat iron. That is the best. If you can't afford the Chi, get one that comes recommended and always use oil or flat iron product on your hair before ironing it.

Girlfriend! I have extremely curly, thick, sometimes frizzy hair. I went to a high end salon to get my hair chemically straightened. Let me tell you what happened to me...First off they put a cream (like a conditionair) on your hair by using a brush that would resemble a paint brush if you will...well its only suppose to be left on for about 15 minutes or so depending on the power of the chemical being used. Well the hair dresser ended up leaving it in my hair too long...my head began to burn and itch...it was HORRIBLE! It damanged my hair so badly I can't even tell you. Not only was my hair damaged but as it began to grow at the roots it was curly and the bottom it was straight. It is expensive, dangerous, and not worth it...
I bought a wet to straight iron which is bad for your hair but if you put the right heat protectors on it--you will be fine. I would reccommend that...but if you do definately know the person who is doing it and have a straightener available for when your hair begins to grow. Good Luck! :)

NOT WORTH IT! Why not love the hair you have and find a great style for your texture? If you insist on having your hair straightened, DON'T do it yourself with over-the-counter products. Find the very best salon you can afford and have it done professionally. Even so, your hair will be burned somewhat and will require constant moisturizing.

Easiest way to chemically straighten hair is to buy a diy perm from any walmart or drug store. Instead of putting it up in rollers, comb it straight. Do everything you are supposed to, just don't put it in rollers. I did this and it worked great. The only thing I didnt like was when it grew out the roots were curly and it looked crazy so i had to re-perm it curly. but I'm sure you can re-perm it straight if you wanted.

particular decrease back in the 60s and the effect grow to be superb for roughly 3 days and then the entire of the ideal fell out leaving long hair all over the perimeters. It took a while to regrow. attempt ceramic straighteners.

Strong chemicals like sodium hydroxide (lye) relax the hair. It is like a perm - it actually physically changes the structure of your hair.
