I plan on painting on a mirror, but I can't decide weather I should use acrylic paints or oil paints. As far as I can tell, I don't think it will make much of a difference either way, except the oil takes longer to dry, so I can take longer to paint it. But I'm not sure if there's any special reason I should use one or the other, except preference. I'm also concerned with being able to clean the unpainted portion of the mirror, and if one type of paint will stay on longer. Or if anybody knows of a totally different type of paint I'm overlooking that would work better for painting a mirror. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

I would use acrylic paint. Besides the fact that it dries quicker if you make a mistake or change your mind it is easier to remove with a single edge razor blade (no smearing). I have painted on a mirror before and once it dries you can clean the unpainted portion of the mirror without wiping off your painting. Unless you use the razor blade or paint thinner your painting will stay put! I am sure they make special paint for Mirrors but why spend the money when acrylic paint will do!

Acrylic Paint On Mirror

Acrylics for sure will come off with scratching or when you use a liquid window cleaner on the mirror. Probably the oil will, too. I would suggest a glass paint, like the Plaid/Folk Art Enamels made for this kind of thing.

Neither oil nor acrylic will adhere well to glass - both will peel off after time.

Invest in specially-formulated glass paint - it is permanent on glass. Great Glass or something similar is easy to find in any art or hobby store.

There are paints out there for painting on glass. They will not come off.

acrylic, definitely. or, some type of model paint, but acrylic is probably the most cost effective. no matter what you use, it will probably come off if you scratch it.

i use polyurethane enamels, they have a limited color selection, but you can mix and match polyurethane to polyurethane, it is a solvent born (oil), but they won't mix with other oils, dryers or colourants. and you can clean with mineral spirits.
