My pug can kiss me and practically lick my lips off if I were to let her. I know this seems a little gross but she gets so excited when i get home that i cant seem deprive her of the joy. I have however noticed that she seems to do this once shes calm as well, so i was just wondering if anyone can tell me a little more about pugs or dogs in general when it comes to practically licking your face off, lol. Thanks

Yes, you are right! Your dog DOES obviously love you very much. But you do have to be careful; there is such a thing as too much affection. When dogs constantly follow you around, lick you, nuzzle you and in general push themselves on you, they are displaying dominance and contesting your control as the pack leader. You need to completely ignore your dog when he is shoving himself on you and continually licking you. Once he is relaxed and submisive, then by all means shower him with love and attention! But when he is demanding attention and you are giving it to him, what you are actually doing is teaching him that he is the boss, and that you are there to do whatever he wants, when he wants. If you allow this dominant behavior, it can lead to numerous other behavioral issues.

I know it's tough when you have that adorable wrinkly little black face in front of you, but it is for your dogs own good, and your own sanity. This way you can share affection with your dog when you feel like it (which I am sure is often!), not when your dog demands it. It's tough, but in no way is it unfair or crual. To the dog, this is a normal, healthy behavior they expect from a pack leader; only when you are playing the role of the pack leader will your dog respect you.

No such thing as too much love. My older pittie has learned that she may kiss, just not in the face. Just offer your hand as a replacement.

My Pom licks my wifes face for minutes on end. I don't know what it means or if it's good for them, but I guess...

mine used to do the same thing, but simply pushing her away from licking but allowing to remain next to you should work, for example... sitting on your lap... etc
