It's okay, the first ingredient in it is corn. You will find that most cat foods start with corn as the main ingredient. Purina Cat Chow starts with chicken. Bet you didn't know that! If you want a moderately priced food, that's the one to get. Other expensive cat foods start with chicken, also, like Iams, Science Diet. But Chow is the best of its price range.

If you want your cat to live a long healthy life, you really need to spend more on food. Brands like Whiskas, Purina, Friskies, are putting a lot of money into TV ads, and not enough money into the food they make. The commericals are cute, but the outcome for the cats isn't.

There are tons of really good foods for your cat that won't cost you more in the long run. You can spend it on the food, or give it to the vet to treat the problems that come from feeding cheap food.

Old Cat Lady is right.

I have a cat that is 18 years old and has never eaten anything except Purina cat chow dry food and Purina can food.
She eats both every day, and she has only been to the vet for her shots. She has never been sick. Don't know about Whiskas, but I sure believe in the Purina.

Absolutely NOT! Read the ingredients on the label from the bag they are listed by weight content: (1) ground corn, (2) chicken by-products, (3) corn gluten meal.

That's a diet that is 2/3 corn - a formula for lots of vomiting and hairballs. By-product meat is the only meat protein in the food. That's the heads, feathers, feet, entrails of chickens - treated with chemicals and by-law labeled as unfit for human consumption. Cats are obligate carnivores and meat is their most important source of nutrition. Science Diet, Meow Mix and 9 Lives, Iams and Purina have the same crappy ingredients. Iams and Purina also cost up to $2.50 per pound. For that price you can go to CA Natural or Nature's Logic - top of the line in pricey cat food.

For maybe $2- $5 more a month you can buy Felidae, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Wysong (does have some corn), Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul or the CA Natural and Nature's Logic. All these foods have human-grade meat protein as their first two ingredients and brown rice, millet, oat or pea as their filler. Those grains are better for your cat than corn.

STRAIGHT and SERIOUS ANSWER: NO!!! Whiskas is NOT in the original recall list nor the subsequent lists from other manufacturers. Whiskas is still SAFE. The only DRY cat food presently on recall is Hill’s (Science Diet) Prescription Diet™ m/d™ Feline Dry

The general rule with pet food is that cheap foods are usually cheap for a reason. Some clients come into our practice and tell us their feeding bottom-shelf pet food, and upon further examination, find that they can't purchase a bag of dirt from Home Depot in the same weight for as cheap as they find pet food - scary.

The biggest problem associated with cheap foods are poor hair coat and dry skin, and in male cats, substandard ingredients can create serious urinary problems. The pH of the food isn't balanced properly, and as a result, the cat's urine is littered with crystals. Male cats have a very narrow urethra, and the crystals can cause inflammation and, as a worst case scenario, cause a urethral obstruction. It's very painful, and very serious.

If you're looking at grocery-store type brands of food, Iams seems to be one of the best. Purina foods aren't too bad, either. Good for you, double checking on what foods are best - informed owners are good owner!

Any cat food you can find at a regular supermarket has the equivalence of human fast food. It has the bare minimum of nutrients cats needs and often less.
Specialty foods, like Science Diet, cost considerably more but your cat will live longer and healthier. If giving your pet a specialty pet food diet is going to break your wallet in two, you can combine the cheap stuff with the healthy stuff to make the healthy stuff stretch longer and the cat will have more nutrients than the regular stuff can give her.
