4 Listen, O sons, to the discipline of a father and pay attention, so as to know understanding. 2 For good instruction is what I certainly shall give to YOU. My law DO not leave. This is my Bible's version. Just as a father tells his son to look both ways before crossing the street, it is a protection. Jehovah is telling us to listen to him and to follow his sayings so that we may be safe and be good in his eyes.

It means exactly what it says do no forsake my law: many people read the bible and think it is just ancient writings of guidelines you can follow if you chose to that have no meaning, that is untrue, the Bible is full of laws mankind HAS to obey or as Proverbs 2:21,22 says will "For the upright are the ones that will reside in the earth, and the blameless are the ones that will be left over in it. As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth; and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it"
So from that we see we can not Forsake Gods law

Sorry about this:
In 1611 the Bible was first translated into English. Guess who was a translator for Proverbs.
Answer: Shakespeare and his crew.
It seems that everyone in the Bible and ever since is pre-occupied voicing their philosophy and then telling us that their philosophy came from God.
Read the entire Bible, then you will realize when a verse has been incorrectly translated.
God's message:
Harmony is harmony.
Disharmony is the only sin against God.
All other definitions of sin have been created by religious leaders trying to scare us into supporting their empires.
Now, do you see how the above verse is wordy. Shakespeare called it poetry.
If it were really God conveying his message, would he not have said simply, "My laws are to help you get along with each other. Follow my laws and you will have peace among yourselves"
Oh, by the way, he did say that through his son Jesus.

Proverbs 4:2 NIV
I give you sound learning,
so do not forsake my teaching.
Solomon was a very wise man, blessed by God. There was never one like him and will never be a man like him. Thus, it makes sense that we should listen to what he has to say. That doesn't mean he always made smart choices. As a matter of fact, by reading his story in the Bible one can see that he made some pretty dumb ones. But regardless, he had wisdom, even if he did not always apply it. Anyway, hope this helps, God bless you also!

The word Doctrine means Teaching. God gives us good teaching. Do not forsake His law means that once we learn God's good teaching, we should be careful to live by it and we will find out that it is good, we will be blessed. If we forsake His law, which means to turn away from it, we will suffer for it. The Proverbs are great for daily widsom.
I hope you don't mind but please let me urge the reader, I have a web site that is mostly based on the book of Proverbs, please visit and click on wisdom.
