It's really up to you. Traditionally there are 3 rings, engagement, her wedding band, his wedding band. You wear the engagement ring on your left ring finger until your wedding. Before the ceremony, you take the engagement ring off (I wore mine on my other hand) so that the band goes on first. Then after the ceremony, you put the engagement ring back on outside the band.

There is different ways people do this.
1) The engagement ring can be bought as a set. To where, there is an addition to the engagement ring to complete as a wedding ring all together. Alot of known Jewel stores do this.
2) Can buy a whole new set and save the engagement ring for later occasion (give to son 20 years down the road type ordeal).
3) Can wear engagement ring, even though doesn't belong to the wedding ring set that was bought. People still do that. Wear it on a different finger or around on a neckless.
4) Take the engagement ring and add on to it. Add more diamonds, sapphires, Ruby's or whatever gem to it.
I am doing number 4 as mine was custom made from Israel. Plus, him and I are tight on cash due to new truck payment, wedding and other things. However, we thought of doing something more special to us. We will add two sapphires (as I have sapphire gem). Then on our 1 year anniv, I will add some diamonds to it to finish it up. We like it that way.
As for the males.
Usually a band of white gold, silver or yellow gold. Whatever kt they want to have and how much they want to spend to buy it.
Wedding sets usually come in male and female sets. Unless, want it sold seperatly.
Now, males traditionally have a band. However, males can have mre added or buy already made. Can have gems with it too.

It is traditional to have 2 seperate rings. One is the engagement ring with a diamond and the other is a wedding band-no diamond. The groom only gets the band (sorry no gems for the fellas)
But I think it is up to you. If you only want to wear 1 ring then you only have to wear 1 ring.

i think it really depends on what you want....i learned...it is YOUR wedding, do what YOU want to no matter what the books or other people say! you will have no regrets later if you remember this.... i had an engagement ring and then got a wedding band sauntered onto it a couple days before the wedding....so in the actual ceremony, my husband put my engagement/wedding ring on..... i LOVE them being together! i wish you the best of luck!

In some European countries you are given a ring when you get engaged that you wear on the none wedding hand ring finger. When you are married it is transfered to the wedding ring finger. The hand they wear the wedding ring on in Austria is the opposite of here in the US. They wear their wedding rings on the right hand wand we wear them on the left.
