You can take this for what it is worth, but hopefully it will give you some confidence knowing that I am a division 1 cross country runner in the NCAA and work at a running store on the side, so I have to give tips like this all the time. The hardest barrier to get over after not training for a long time is getting back into the rhythm. Often the problem is not physical, but purely mental. Your body is completely happy not exherting any effort on itself, so your mind often tells you to stop. You SHOULD NOT rush back into running. Take it three days at a time, running for 15-20 minutes on those days. For example, run monday wednesday saturday, for 15 to 20 minutes. If you find it difficult, you can walk for a couple of minutes within there. Training like this will also help you avoid any injuries such as shin splints that you would get from trying to run too hard too quickly. Once you get comfortable with the 15-20 minutes 3 days a week, throw in an extra day, and an extra couple of minutes per week. Make sure you're completely comfortable before upping your mileage. In addition, always leave yourself a day or two of rest per week even if you feel like running every day. Your body needs it. Also, taking two days rest a week when you're in your best condition will help you stay in that condition without getting injured.

Everything I have said is assuming that you are not training for any race or competition, but merely doing all this to get back into shape.

Just begin with an easy jog. You don't have to do a full-out fast run. You can just jog lightly. Try it for 20 minutes to begin with. Then, add a few more minutes on the next week. Running on a tredmill can help, because you can actually monitor how fast you go. Set it to a 1 degree incline and jog slowly at about 4.7-5.1 for twenty minutes.
