There is a gift set of Harry Potter books, both in Soft Cover & Hard Cover. It is great to give books to kids for Christmas! Particularly ones that encourage imagination the way J.K. Rowling does. The price would dictate that it be a shared gift I would imagine!

I have a 7 year old and a 9 year old....and if I didn't get them toys they would probably flip out.
(not that they're spoiled) but they ARE self centered.
We don't have money to go all out or anything, but the only thing I can say besides toys is books, and puzzles, and clothes...but if you think your 8 year old is going to jump up and down for joy for a bunch of socks...you're nuts...
Well...is he/she outdoorsy? A fishing pole, or ski gear or something would probably be neat. I think for my 9 year old boy he's really into robots, and my 7 year old is into comic books...
So, there is my opinion!
Merry Christmas.

Most likely, they're into video games or sports. So if you have like enough money then a game system would work because it's a game system. What eight year old wouldnt want one? If they like sports then get like those sports sets they sell in Toys R Us. The table ones with different games in them would work.
Clothes would probably work too or board games.

I have found that the Leap Pad series of books are great. They grow with your kids and you can get educational books and game books that go with them. You can always pass them on also. You can find so many age appropriate material. Then when birthdays roll around you can buy them new material for them. There great.
