I agree with previous answers, that smugness and idiocy are both irritating.
A couple of people made this point, but maybe not quite as clearly as I am going to.
'Atheism' is a belief-system. It is, in fact a 'FAITH'. Indeed, it is a THEISTIC faith, based upon the firm and steadfast belief that there ABSOLUTELY IS NO GOD. The big clue, is the 'theism' part of 'atheism'. 'Theism', from the Greek, 'theos' (whence 'theology'; Latin 'deus', whence 'divine', 'devil', 'deity'; earlier Sanskrit 'deva/i' which also means 'deity') means GOD. 'A-' means NONE.
Atheists are the ultimate idiots, because their faith in the absence of God is as nonverifiable (all faith has to be... that's why they call it 'FAITH', duh!) as any believer's faith in the presence of God. Worse, they are usually 'A-' the Christian 'theos'. They don't generally go on about there being no divine ANYTHING. It's a specific deity whose existence they deny. I call that belief.
Fundamentalist Atheists -- which is what I picture when you say 'smug atheists' are so confused that they would deny to their dying day that they believe anything. That's even more idiotic, than the gibbering, frothing, Christians.
HOWEVER...
So far, no atheist, however smug, or pushy and obnoxious, has started a jihad against another religion, in which people have died in droves.
President George (I Was a Coke-Fiend & a Drunk, Until I Was Born-Again. Praise the Lord, and Hand Out the Guns) Bush is a JIHADI Christian EXTREMIST. He's also an idiot. Bad combination. President of USA+idiot+lunatic-fringe Christian Extremist=Very Dangerous Nutjob.
Tony Blair's pretty loony too...
So, I have to say the 'irritating' prize goes to the so-called 'atheists'.
The 'alarming' prize goes to the idiotic Christians (and Muslims -- both of whom believe in a mandate for global conversion).
I, personally, would add Zionist fanatics, which is not, and never has been, about Judaism (in much the same way that the Inquisition was not about Roman Catholicism), but has ALWAYS been about politics and land-grabbing.
Me, I think all organised religion has a little to offer, and tend toward Hinduism because my mother was. Spirituality and 'theism' are unrelated, in my informed opinion.
As many people said, people who are so hidebound by nonverifiable 'truths' are all trouble. I'm much more concerned about the verifiable ones, here on Earth.

I would say there are comparable amounts of smugness and idiocy on both sides. As to which is more irritating would have to depend on what your mindset is. Personally i find some of the atheists irritating, and some of the Christians irritating. It's not the person that is irritating, it's the content of their posts.
There is one very active member of this board that i often read and can't help but stare in disgust for what they are saying... but this same person (a Christian) on a number of occasions has been voted by me to be the best answer to my question. It's possible to find common ground almost anywhere, but sometimes you really have to look hard, and have an open mind.

Groups aren't irritating. Individuals are. Individuals from both of these groups have been equally irritating. Just my opinion.

Both idiocy and smuggishness are irritating to me.
I am a Christian, as an excuse for those who want to disagree with me on the following, but I think the Atheist. Duh, right! but wait.
The bible which Christians follow indicates why they should preach, to spread the gospel.
Why do the atheist feel the need to prove Christians wrong and themselves correct. Who's gospel are they spreading? If they say no one's, then wouldn't it really be that persons gospel wait personal philosophy about reason for existance? Why do they feel the need to try to inform everyone that Christianity is wrong and they are right? Who is pleased with this behavior? In Christianity, Christians do it to be pleasing to God, and to help save someone from eternal damnation. What is the motivation for the Atheist? Why would a true atheist ever be concerned about religion at anytime, especially in times of their own choosing? It is difficult for me to imagine ever having a religious discussion with a true atheist. ....a little help with this one would be interesting!

Personally, I can't understand what makes the christians so incredulous that the atheists won't believe a fairy story, and then feel as though they've 'won' when the atheists are unable to disprove the myths. Irritating idiotic christians win hands down.

Ooh, I like this. Let me see.... I'll just say the atheists because I happen to disagree with their ideology, but just as they express their beliefs is concerned, I'd say the two groups are of equal asininity. Then again, I might have to say the Christians are worse, because they give a bad name to the greatest faith. It's a bit of a toss-up on this one; take care.

There is an old saying that "It ain't what you don't know that'll kill you, it's what you know for sure that ain't so".
Both groups you have mentioned tend to be very vocal and claim to have a corner on the TRUTH.
Amazing that people can argue so fiercely over the details of the unknown.

The idiotic Christians, if they are of the aggressive born-again variety that tells every one including other Christians that if they don't believe exactly like they do, they will all end up in Hell. This type goes around spreading division and hate when their leader supposedly taught love. How do they justify their actions? I am grateful to live in the US where we have freedom of religion. You are free to believe or not believe as you wish. You are responsible for your own destiny--eternal or not.

Isn't it funny how similar they can be. Both insist it is their way or the highway. Both persist in trying to convert others. Neither seems to listen to a word or idea that anyone else has. Astonishing.
Of course it is always nice to hear from compassionate atheists and enlightened christians.
Peace!

Translating "idiotic" to raving fundamentalists....I'd say THOSE Christians are more irritating and do more harm to Christianity than the smug atheists.
I am a Christian.
