Er, Judah's firstborn was wicked and the Lord slew him. Genesis 38: 7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. Judah told Onan to raise up children in his brother name. This was a custom of the Nation of Israel families and when he didn't wish to do this he spilled his seed upon the ground. Genesis 38: 8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. Genesis 38: 9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. What he did displeased the Lord and He slew him also. This has nothing to do with using condom. We have no such custom. We are living in the age of grace, God is not killing us for doing things that displease Him. We have a free will and if we don't wish to have children God is not forcing us to. We can also reject what the Lord Jesus Christ did on the cross for all that would believe. He died for our sins.

The real question is "WHY" Onan was refusing to get his brother's widow pregnant. That's where you will find the sin: in the motivation.
Onan knew that any children born to this woman would NOT be "his". They would, for the sake of inheiritence, belong to his older brother. The oldest brother typically got a double portion of whatever was inheirited from their father, in this case, whatever it was, was worth half (three brothers, inheiritance divided into 4 equal shares, oldest brother gets 2 shares, 2 younger brothers each get one).
With Er dead, Onan was left as the oldest brother, and was now due 2/3 of Dad's property. UNLESS Er's wife had a son, in which case everything was divided back into fourths, and Er's "son" got the bigger portion.
Follow the money trail. In some cultures that is enough to be counted as a motive for murder. In this case, all Onan had to do was "fail" to get his sister-in-law pregnant, and he got the big package, as well as a couple of good months in the sack. In a way, he was trying to screw his brother twice!
BTW, he could have outright refused to do the deed. He was dishonest as well as a cheat.
Ok, so that's lying, attempted theft (of the inheiritance), sexual misconduct (taking advantage of his sister-in-law), and a proto-abortion (refusing to create life). All in this one man's form of birth control. Family planning is not the problem here, the problem was in Onan's motives for doing (or not) the deed.

The sin was in promising to produce children to carry on the families line, then cheating them by not letting it happen.
