The left hinge of my jaw has started locking up sporadically when I open my mouth. It has been getting gradually worse over the last 6 months and is starting to be a bit of a worry. It does unlock and has never been stuck, but it's not a very nice sensation....happening fairly regularly now.

Has anyone experienced this.....was it a dental or a doctor problem?

Don't worry about it. I've had the problem for a long time now, and the technical term for it is TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder). There's a lot to it, so here's the link:

Really though, it's not a HUGE deal. More of a pain to deal with than anything. And don't worry, it won't completely lock up on you!

It sounds like TMJ syndrome. You need to go to your dentist. I have had this all my life and it's really a pain. It is not so easy to deal with. You may have to get braces to pull your teeth into alignment. In my teens I had problems with my jaws locking up. I noticed it especially when I kissed my boyfriend. :) Seriously,go see a dental specialist and get advice on what you need to do ,long term. Neglecting it has cost me so much ,time, pain and Money Money.Tension and anxiety usually set it off.I get a massage for my neck and shoulders about once a week. That has helped me soooo much. Also avoid eating apples, beef jerky etc.Anything that you have to bite into using the front teeth pulls your jaw out. I love beef jerky but it really overworks strained jaw muscles. Moist warm heat also helps to relax the muscles. Good luck,I hope this helps.

Well, it may be lock jaw (TMJ). That's when your jaw locks up and if you feel pain it's usually near the ears so it gets misdiagnosed as a ear infection. I have a mild case of it, and it's from grinding my teeth at night. If that is something you do, I'd suggest telling your dentist so he/she can fit you for a night guard. It may look stupid but it works great. Feel free to contact me if you need any advice.

That is what is called TMJ. I have it only my jaw doesn't lock. It is when the cartilage that keeps the skull and the jaw bones from rubbing together, either becomes displaced or wears out. I would go to the dentist and see what he thinks, before it gets worse..

Women get this more than men. Get to the doctor right away, my sister had this and both sides locked up. It was very painful and she couldn't eat for months. Don't mess with it. Compare what you're going through with this, it may be it:

i have that too, but my jaw also pops sometime, basically if its the same as my problem then your jaws are out of alignment. i was told a long time ago that in order to fix that they have to sew your jaw up for a period of time. and i never wanted to do that so i never had it done

I used to have this when I was a child and so did my mom. I think she went to the doctors once and he said that she might need some fluid. You might need braces.
