He is a Boddhisatva who is repeatedly reincarnated because he has anchored himself in this world through compassion. His name means "Ocean of Wisdom" and the current one is the fourteenth. He was born Tenzin Gyatzo and had to flee Tibet when the Chinese occupation got out of control. His best friend, the Panchin Lama, stayed behind and was killed. When the Dalai Lama returned to Tibet to find his reincarnation the Chinese Government abducted the child who was the reincarnation and has been imprisoning him for 13 years. They chose their own Panchin Lama (Not the real one) and are waiting for the Dalai Lama to die so they can have their imposter choose a new false one, and in this way they will destroy the Tibetan culture. He has been traveling to find a non-violent solution. His Government in exile is located in northern India...
He is not like a pope, he has no authority over most Buddhists. He is the spiritual ruler of Tibet, a country that has been oppressed for many years...

When the lama dies the monks travel all over china to find a baby born at the same time as thgey believe the soul of the lama re-incarntaes
I read that this time they will search the entire world as they believe he will not be born in China this time ,
He is a great leader a simple read of the books he has authored will show what an inspiring individual he is - if every political leader had the nature of the lama we would never have wars or conflict

Like the others before him, he is a reincarnation of a prior Dalai Lama, too.
Here's one of his current sayings: "Why worry? If you know you can solve the problem, then there's no need for you to worry. If you know you cannot solve the problem, then why do you have to worry...?"
